Top 10 waterfalls to see with your dog
Today, I find our super Ambassa-Dog Hélène and her dog Taïko to talk to you about waterfalls! In France, there are very many waterfalls or extraordinary waterfalls. Over the centuries, nature has shaped incredible landscapes and some waterfalls have thus become essential tourist spots. To admire certain secret waterfalls, you sometimes have to walk along the river for a few kilometers before discovering this magnificent spectacle of nature. This is an opportunity to fill up on nature and recharge your batteries a little. It is also the occasion to find a little freshness for you and your dog near a pretty source of water. It is also often the occasion for a good swim with your dog. I'm a big fan of stunts. When I go on vacation with my dog or when I go hiking with my dog, I systematically look for waterfalls to discover. This landscape, the sound of water and the force of water soothe me. As I don't know all the waterfalls in France, I interviewed Hélène and Taïko who know a good number of them! I let them guide you in this top 10 waterfalls in France to discover with your dog.
Hello Wouafer's, it's Hélène, I'm delighted to meet you again to tell you about one of our favorite activities with Taïko: going on a hike with my dog. This time, I'm taking you on a hike, but not only! I'm going to show you my top 10 of the most beautiful waterfalls to discover with a dog.
I will also give you some tips for organizing your stunt outings, I have become a bit of an expert with Taïko.
Before starting, I wanted to specify that to establish this top 10 of the best waterfalls in France to discover with your dog, the conditions of access for dogs and the reception of the dog were essential criteria for making my selection. Going to the waterfalls especially in the summer, I always think for example of the possibility or not of swimming for my potato
Discovering a waterfall with your dog: a Too W'ouf activity
Waterfalls, there are almost everywhere in France. I have been to the Vosges a lot as I live nearby. However, where there are the most in France is the Occitanie region. To see cool waterfalls, there are also the departments of the Doubs ou of the Jura… So many places Too W'ouf that I encourage you to visit.
I find the waterfalls so majestic and magnificent that I wanted to share my favorites with you! Nature knows how to do crazy things. It's a whole, I think, the sound of the waterfalls, the energy, but also the power of the water, the spirit that reigns on the spot. It feels a bit like being in a magical place and as I love the imaginary world of fairies, I am always overwhelmed when I go to visit a waterfall. Moreover, some waterfalls even have legends, some quite strange for some – you will see later in the article.
Musher and Sophie: Occitania? oh yes, I confirm that we have very beautiful waterfalls accessible with a dog here. With Musher we already watch often top 10 lakes to organize our holidays or our weekends, so I can't wait to discover Hélène's good waterfall plans! Especially in summer when it's hot.
How to prepare for your waterfall walk with your dog?
Above all, when you go to discover a waterfall with your dog, you should not overload yourself too much, because you have to carry everything to the waterfall. Some waterfalls are accessible by car (sometimes, it's convenient) but very often they are “deserved” and hidden after a nice hike. Before discovering the waterfall, you will have to hike a few kilometers. No question of leaving with a pair of flip-flops on your feet, as with all hikes, you have to be properly equipped and equip your dog correctly.
You can, for example, choose a packsack for your dog and a bit to share the weight of things to carry with your dog. He can, for example, carry his water, his Frisbee or his small towel.
Personally, I always take something to drink for myself as well as for Taïko: the travel bottles for dogs are really practical! I also plan what to eat and treats for my potato. I always wear or bring a bathing suit just in case (well, when it's hot of course). Taiko doesn't need it! He is always ready to jump into the water.
Musher and Sophie: Yes our dogs are not very comfortable with the swimsuit generally haha. Joking aside, just wanted to remind you to be careful. to cyanobacteria when you go swimming with your dog! These bacteria are truly a nightmare for our hair. Logically, if you opt for a waterfall, the water will move enough to avoid the risk of being “poisoned” by cyanobacteria, but an informed master is worth two! So I'd rather warn than meet you at the veterinary emergency room.
One of the most important things to pack for me is the first aid kit for me and for my dog! The stunts, it slips and you can't always avoid sores. In addition, there are rocks which can be sharp, pieces of glass (not everyone respects nature!!!!) If it is not already in your first aid kit, remember to take a tick tweezer. It can be useful for your dog as well as for you.
Musher and Sophie: The dog first aid kit is such an ESSENTIAL item to take on an outing with your dog. By the way, Musher's is still with us. I introduce you Musher's first aid kit in the Mag'.
Of course, I will not recall the fact that it is necessary to carry poop bags when you go outside with your pooch! Besides, it's also good to think of a big trash bag, because unfortunately you sometimes don't have a trash can on the way and it's very important to respect the places if you want to continue to be able to go there.
Other accessories I bring:
-
A life jacket for my dog. There can be strong currents so it is an essential safety accessory.
-
A lanyard : As I no longer let go of Taïko for safety reasons, it is important for me to take a lanyard so that he can make the most of it. Taïko is a very curious dog, a leaf, a butterfly, a running child… He takes that for an invitation to play and takes off like an arrow.
-
A harness : I use a harness so that Taïko has fun with the lanyard during the hike. Taïko is in traction mode. He also helps me on the way, we go cani-rando.
Musher and Sophie: Indeed Hélène these last accessories are very good ideas! The life jacket seems essential to us with Musher for all nautical activities. It's far from being a gimmick or a madness of a dog gaga, haha! If you want to know more about life jackets for dogs, read all my advice on the life jacket for dogs in the Mag'. You will know how to choose yours and what are the important criteria to take into account to equip your dog correctly.
The top 10 waterfalls to do with your dog
Fall of the Druise
I love the fall of the Druise in the Drôme. It is even possible to swim! Access is on foot in about 30 minutes via a steep path. You will find yourself face to face with a majestic waterfall seventy-two meters high with clear water with bluish reflections. It's a bit of a microclimate there: it's cool and humid whatever the season. Nature is almost always luxuriant there! Taïko was crazy in front of such a big waterfall!
Sillans Waterfall
La Sillans waterfall it is located at Sillans-la-cascade to be original, in the department of Yes. To get there, it's super simple, it's a round trip. I recommend keeping your dog on a leash, the trail can be dangerous at times. There are several lookouts that give stunning views of the waterfall.
Please note that swimming has been prohibited since January 2005 to preserve the waterfall and avoid accidents due to falling rocks. You still have the possibility of swimming further downstream by descending along the river. You just have to find out in advance or see if it's still possible depending on the different droughts, the risk of fire and also the influx of tourists.
The waterfall of Runes
La Runes waterfall is located on the Mount Lozère à Pont-de-Montvert-South-Mont-Lozere. I find it impressive, because it is very high: 70 meters! Your dog has the right to bathe there, be careful however, the chasms are very deep with more than 20 meters for one and 7 m for the other. The descent to get to the waterfall is a bit steep. However, it remains easily accessible thanks to the car park near the waterfall. It is just outside the village of Runes. Summer or winter, you will always find water in this magnificent waterfall. You can even take a short hike around the waterfall.
Waterfall the Source of the Loue
The source of rent is in the Jura. It is surrounded by vestiges dating from the Middle Ages. This waterfall is really impressive. It springs from a vast cave which is 60 meters wide and 30 meters high. It is located in a rocky Trop W'ouf cirque, at the foot of a 104-metre-high cliff. The show is always interesting since the waterfall always has flow even in the event of drought. In addition, there are signs everywhere that will allow you to better know the place. With Taïko, we found this very interesting. And last little surprise: there are several hikes and things to discover around.
The Billaude waterfall
The Billaude waterfall is also found in the Jura massifWithin Lemma gorges. It is a two-part waterfall. She falls twice; without getting hurt of course haha. It is 28 meters high in all and springs from a crack in the cliff. There are several belvederes around to see it from more or less high. With Taïko, we loved going around the belvederes, he doesn't feel dizzy at all, so it's royal. Be careful with your dog's pads though, as there may be small blunt pebbles. It really is a magnificent waterfall that I recommend with your eyes closed! Your dog will have a blast there and you can go for a nice hike.
The Saut de Gouloux waterfall
La Saut du Gouloux waterfall is in the Morvan Regional Park in the Nièvre. It is a 10 meter high waterfall that falls from an old fault. Be careful, you will not see it from the road, you will have to walk a bit! Guided by the sound of water, that's how we found it with Taïko the first time. Moreover, a sound cabin has been installed to increase the noise of the water. On your way, you will see old stone walls dressed in moss, leaves and a pretty forest of conifers. All this gives a wild, even magical character to the place. Around the waterfall, you will see the ruins of two mills, one for oil and one for flour, as well as an old floating port. It's too pretty and original. Notice to cani-hikers, there are also beautiful hiking trails around!
Vulvoz Waterfall
I still have a pretty waterfall in the Jura to recommend to you! it's about the Vulvoz waterfall which is south of Saint-Claude. The waterfall is less than a 10 minute walk from the parking lot. With Taïko, we parked on the upper part of the waterfall, but in summer, there can be a few people and many park along the road. Let's go back to the waterfall: it is 22 meters high. If you want to go down to the foot of the waterfall, bring a good pair of sneakers, because it's a bit steep and the ground is slippery. Also make sure that the descent will not be too difficult for your pooch. Otherwise, you can also admire the waterfall very well from above! The place is super nice to visit with a dog.
Musher and Sophie: It's not always easy to hike with your dog when the path is a bit steep! If you have a small or a medium dog you can opt for a backpack to carry your dog when the hike becomes too complicated: if there are steps, your dog is dizzy or simply the descent is too steep. It's really Too W'ouf as a concept! Unfortunately Musher is a little oversized to fit in a backpack.
The Great Waterfall of Mortain
La Great waterfall of Mortain it is located at Mortain, riding a Normandy. To see this great waterfall in its entirety, there is a path that runs along the waterfall and which allows you to go from its summit to the foot of its fall. It's very impressive, because the flow is super strong.
Further down there is also the small Mortain waterfall. Yes, why visit only one waterfall when you have the opportunity to see two! This waterfall is accessible by a path laid out on the side of the waterfall. Be careful, the ground can be slippery for you and your doggie. Did I tell you how much I love fairies and legends? This one is inhabited by a very particular legend. It is said that if you listen carefully, you can hear the beating heart of Leonix, an unhappy young man. This curious boy would have liked to spy on the fairies spinning flax at the place of the waterfall, but was surprised by the queen of the fairies. Very angry, the latter would have thrown a needle in the heart and turned him into a rock.
Musher and Sophie: As ancient inhabitants of Brittany, you can imagine that with Musher we have heard dozens and dozens of myths and legends. We are fans! The Brocéliande Forest is full of them. Visit Normandy with your dog, it's great yes, but visit Brittany with a dog, it's also Too W'ouf if you like tales and legends of fairies and goblins of all kinds!
If you do the whole walk, count about 3 h 15 or 13 km. The difficulty of this hike is average I would say! No particular obstacles, you just have to be a little careful where you put your feet when there is a drop
The Sautadet waterfalls
The Sautadet waterfalls are near La Roque-sur-Ceze in the Gard. The photo makes you want, doesn't it? It really is a wonderful place to discover if you don't know it. However, be careful during summer vacation periods, it is a very touristy place! If you want to swim with your doggie, it's possible! But remember to go where the water is calmest, let's avoid drowning. Moreover, the nickname of this site is the devil's jump as there are large cliffs and therefore fatal accidents are numerous in certain places. The safest thing is to accompany your furball to the water, on the natural beaches.
The Ray-Pic waterfall
La Ray-Pic Waterfall is located in the municipality of Pereyres, in the Cevennes Ardéchoise. Before arriving at the waterfall parking lot, you will have the opportunity to admire the waterfall from a roadside lookout. Once in the car park, all the information about the place is indicated. No comprehension problem for Taïko and me in any case! It's a super dog friendly place but unfortunately not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, as there are several stairs. Bathing is forbidden to humans for safety reasons, however you can let your dog soak his paws. I only recommend that you be careful and keep on a leash.
The final word
Here are the canipotos, I hope my article will be useful for you to find the waterfall of your dreams to discover for your holidays or your weekend.
My last advice before going to visit a waterfall, whatever it is, is to think about getting information beforehand. Indeed, some waterfalls are closed according to the season, and others can be dangerous, with the current... After having found my activity on EmmeneTonChien.com, I sometimes get information from the tourist offices to know the frequentation of the place, because according to the seasons certain waterfalls are flooded with people or inaccessible.
If you want to know more about the duo that I form with Taïko, I invite you to read our portrait Wow Good. You can learn everything from us!
