An incredible destination to discover if you love hiking with your dog: the Jura Mountains! Its magnificent mountains, its trails to explore at sunset, its streams where your dog will be delighted to dip its paws in... Discover the most beautiful hikes in the Jura in this article!

If you're looking for a nature destination, with wide open spaces to explore and trails far from the crowds, you'll love the Jura . For several years now, I've noticed it's a favorite destination for dog lovers. Many of you share photos and reels of the Jura on social media with the hashtag #emmenetonchien (bringyourdog). And I must admit, it's become one of my favorite destinations too. Five years ago, we booked our first stay in Les Rousses with my dog, a bit by chance, just to try out a new area. We've already been back four times, both summer and winter, and we're already itching to go again! We have a wonderful time every time.

In this new article for the Mag', I'm going to tell you about the Jura region and suggest a selection of hikes to share with your dog . Some are perfect for a first outing, others require a bit more energy, but they all have one thing in common: they make you want to lace up your boots, grab the leash, fill your water bottle… and head out to breathe in the fresh air with your canine companion. I'll also give you a rundown of dog gear to ensure you're well-equipped and come back with magical memories.

And as always, I'll share everything you need to know to plan your getaway to the Jura with your dog, recommending great dog-friendly places and accommodations with the QUALIDOG label . Off we go to the land of Comté cheese, Mont d'Or cheese, Vin Jaune wine, and Morteau sausage (just the lightest things for hiking 🤣).

Summary

Why the Jura with your dog?

This human-scale mountain haven, nestled between lakes, forests, and gentle ridges, is a little paradise for hikers of all kinds . Here, you don't need to aim for the summit of Mont Blanc to be blown away. Just put on your hiking boots, grab the leash, and follow your dog's ears 🐶

What we particularly like about the Jura Mountains is:

  • calm, even in high season,

  • the bodies of water for paddling and paddleboard or canoe
  • the waterfalls !!!
  • et the reception more and more dog friendly !

So if you're looking for a vacation where hiking rhymes with complicity, nature, and freedom, look no further... the Jura welcomes you with its arms (and its leash too 😉). Here's a selection of 5 perfect hikes to do with your dog in the Jura.

What equipment should I bring for hiking with my dog in the Jura mountains?

Before sharing my 5 hiking ideas for dogs in the Jura Mountains, a quick but essential detour to talk about equipment. Because a great dog-friendly hike isn't just about a beautiful route: it's also about a well-equipped dog, comfortable in its harness, visible, hydrated, and ready to enjoy the trails safely.

In the Jura Mountains, you can quickly go from a damp forest path to a viewpoint, from a waterfall to a lake, from a leisurely stroll to a more challenging outing. In short, it's best to plan ahead a little before heading out with your nose to the wind!

🐕 For comfortable walking: the hiking harness

A good hiking harness for dogs allows them to move freely and comfortably, even on longer hikes. It's essential for enjoying the trails without pulling on their collar.

🏔️ For cani-hiking: the traction harness

If your dog naturally pulls or if you walk at a brisk pace, an elastic leash with a harness can really improve comfort for both you and your dog. Opt for a pulling harness.

💦 To manage the unexpected

Rain, swimming, muddy path, fatigue… a towel, a bathrobe, a light or a small first aid kit for dogs can save the outing.

Your dog's hiking bag:

  • un walking harness ou pulling harness suitable for cani-hiking;
  • or a pack bag for dogHe will then be able to carry his belongings
  • a comfortable leash to keep your dog attached without restricting it;
  • a collapsible bowl and enough water for both of you;
  • another first aid kit for minor injuries;
  • un waterproof dog coat if the weather deteriorates;
  • un nomadic rug or trekking mats for comfortable breaks;
  • a light or reflective accessory to remain visible;
  • a towel or a bathrobe If your dog loves water as much as Musher!

The essential selection for a successful hike

Musher's advice: don't confuse a walking harness with a pulling harness. For a leisurely hike, a walking harness is perfectly adequate. However, if your dog is really pulling ahead, especially during cani-hiking or canicross, you need to use equipment designed for that purpose, and therefore opt for a pulling harness like an X-back.

The top 5 dog-friendly hikes in the Jura

Now that the bag is ready, the water bottle filled and the harness adjusted, let's think about some walks!
Here are 5 hikes to discover in the Jura Mountains with your dog.

Finding a nice hike with your dog isn't just about the number of kilometers. You have to think about shade, elevation gain, water sources, how busy the trail is, technical sections, livestock, protected natural areas… and the dog's energy level that day.

For this selection, I've chosen five varied routes in the Jura Mountains: loops around lakes, walks in the forest, waterfalls, viewpoints, and routes of varying difficulty. The idea is to give you some real ideas for planning a great day out with your dog, whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike.

💡 For each hike, I've included a link to the detailed itinerary so you can check the route, distance, elevation gain, and practical information before setting off. Always remember to check local conditions, the weather forecast, and dog regulations for the area. 🌲🐕

  • 🐶 1. Tour of Lake Chalain

📍 Start Point: Marigny
📏 12,4 km | ⏱️ 4h30 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Level: moderate | ⛰️Elevation gain: 338m

This trail circles the famous Lake Chalain, taking in its wilder, shadier sides . It's a beautiful nature loop with several viewpoints and the possibility of a swim for your dog if you avoid the more crowded areas.

💡 Tip: Musher and I went canoeing there! The water is crystal clear: a real treat. I have an inflatable canoe, so when we saw the lake, we couldn't resist. 😍 Here's another way to enjoy the lake!

Hiking around Lake Chalain with a dog in the Jura: magnificent viewpoint

🎒 Good gear tip: if your dog loves water as much as Musher, remember to keep a dog towel or bathrobe in the car. After a swim in a Jura lake, you'll be glad you didn't turn the trunk into a wetland.

  • 🐾 2. From the Billaude waterfall to the Pêchettes pond

📍 Start Point: The Vaudioux
📏 11,1 km | ⏱️ 4h25 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Level: moderate | ⛰️Elevation gain: 428m

A refreshing hike among waterfalls, rivers, and undergrowth , ideal for dogs who love to walk in the cool air and get their paws wet. The Billaude waterfall is stunning; it's one of the most magnificent sites in the Jura region. The path to the pond offers beautiful viewpoints. There are two lovely viewpoints to explore along the way.

🐕 Perfect for sporty and curious dogs, with a bit of elevation gain and lots of thrills! Be aware of the openwork steel staircase: for Musher, who has severe vertigo, going up and down these stairs would be done in my arms…

🐕 Good gear tip: On trails with stairs, viewpoints, or more technical sections, a harness with a handle can help secure certain crossings, especially with a dog that's easily frightened or unaccustomed to heights. Decathlon's hiking harness or pack with detachable pockets is perfect for this.

  • 🌿 3. Panoramic walk around Lake Bonlieu

📍 Start Point: Bonlieu
📏 6,8 km | ⏱️ 2h35 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Moderate level | ⛰️Elevation gain: 242m

A short but stunning loop with incredible views of the lake. It alternates between forest, viewpoints (the Ronde and Maguenay viewpoints), quiet paths, and the lakeshore. It's one of the wildest spots in the Jura region. Ideal for less athletic dogs , or families with children and their canine companions. Please note that swimming is prohibited here for EVERYONE except your dog, who can dip its paws in the water. A little frustrating, but that's what guarantees the beauty of the site.

🍂 Best done in the fall for the colours… and the peace and quiet on the trails. Not far away is the famous 4 Lakes viewpoint: a fascinating place that I love, but be warned, it gets very crowded during peak season, which is why I chose not to include this hike in this top 5.

  • 💧 4. Small steps to the source of the Ain

📍 Start Point: Tale
📏 4,8 km | ⏱️ 1h55 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Easy level | ⛰️Elevation gain +: 191m

A perfect little walk for a refreshing break or a first hike with your dog. The path follows the river and leads to a crystal-clear spring nestled in a small rocky cirque . Very quiet and peaceful. Along the way, you'll discover the Moulin du Saut waterfall.

🐾 Great for senior dogs, puppies or a post-picnic walk.

  • 🌄 5. Panoramic hike around Lake Vouglans

📍 Start Point: Maisod
📏 6,1 km | ⏱️ 2h15 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Easy level | ⛰️Elevation gain: 171m

A balcony trail overlooking the lake, with spectacular views and little traffic . Dogs will appreciate the wooded sections, shady spots and secluded nooks for cooling off.

🌞 Personally, I didn't try this hike as I wasn't familiar with it when I went, but I did try the lake, again in an inflatable canoe with my dog. Another memorable moment from my holiday in the Jura with Musher.

💡 Good gear tip: if you're setting off early or extending your walk into the late afternoon, add a light to your collar or harness . In the forest, the light can fade quickly.

⚠️ Hiking with your dog in the Jura: rules to know before you go

Before going hiking in the Jura with your dog, here are some important points to keep in mind 🐾

🥾 Some natural areas, such as the Haute Chaîne du Jura Nature Reserve, are off-limits to dogs , even on a leash. During the summer grazing season, you might also encounter Pyrenean Mountain Dogs ( Patous ), those large white dogs that protect the flocks. Nothing dramatic, but it's best to be informed to hike with peace of mind.

🌿 Add to that ticks, rapidly changing weather, sometimes steep trails… and you'll quickly understand that hiking with a dog requires a little preparation 😉

  • equipment to take away,

I'm sharing this information here because I had the unpleasant surprise of discovering the decree on the first day of my recent vacation in the Jura Mountains: dogs are prohibited from December 15th to June 30th in the areas covered by Prefectural Orders for Biotope Protection (APPB) in the "High-Altitude Forests of the Haut-Jura": the Massacre, Bois de Ban-Arobiers, Risoux, Haute-Joux, and Combe Noire forests. The APPB is a strictly protected zone established to preserve biodiversity, often including rare and endangered species. Outside of these dates, your dog must be kept on a leash in these areas. For complete information before you go, you can find detailed details here.
