I'd like to introduce you to Decathlon's brand new dog flotation vest. Practical for all water activities with your dog, I had the opportunity to test it with Musher and I'll share my feedback in this article.

When Decathlon announced the release of their very first dog flotation vest, my ears immediately perked up. Well… figuratively speaking.

Because the dog life jacketFor us, this isn't just a new accessory. With Musher, water sports are a long-standing tradition. Like any good Labrador, she can never resist the call of the water! So, over the past 10 years, I've had the opportunity to test several models of dog life jackets : some very good ones, some funny but not sturdy ones, some easy to put on, and some much less easy to adjust on a dog impatient to go swimming.

So naturally, when Decathlon releases a dog life jacket Designed for water sports, I'm eager to learn more. I spoke with the team that designed it to understand what's behind this new product. And as always in these "behind-the-scenes" discussions, I came away with lots of interesting information to share with you.

And then, of course, Musher tested it for real. A test on a dog that swims, moves, jumps, gets back on a paddleboard, and shakes its 34 kilos of wet happiness right next to you. In this article, I'll take you behind the scenes of this new Decathlon dog flotation vestThen I'll share my full feedback: what I liked, how it compared to my old vests, and what activities I recommend it for.

What exactly is a dog flotation vest?

Un dog life jacketThis is equipment designed to help your dog be more comfortable and safer in the water.

It is used during water sports activities such as:

🐾 paddleboarding
🐾 the canoe
🐾 the boat
🐾 swimming in lakes, rivers or the sea
🐾 Holidays by the water with your dog

In practice, the vest is worn a bit like a wraparound harness. It contains foam zones that help the dog float better, while still allowing it the freedom to swim naturally.

A buoyancy aid, not a magic wand

One important point: we are indeed talking about dog life jacket, and not a life jacket in the strict sense.

His role is to bring a buoyancy aidIt does not replace your supervision, common sense, or basic precautions when you go out on the water with your dog.

But it can really help your dog to:

✅ better float
✅ limit your fatigue
✅ remain more visible in the water
✅ Get back on a paddleboard, canoe, or boat more easily thanks to the handles

When you've ever tried to pull a wet, happy, and overexcited dog up onto a paddleboard... you quickly realize that the handle is not just a small decorative detail.

With Musher, a life jacket is part of our basic equipment whenever we go on a water activity. I have 7 different models in my garage, that's how many I've tested!

Musher swims in the river wearing an orange Decathlon flotation vest

However, my dog swims very well. She loves the water. She could spend her life between two dives, three rolls in the sand and a wet nap in the sun.

Even a good swimming dog can tire faster than expected, be surprised by a wave or current, slip off a paddleboard – yes, Musher falls asleep on it – or have trouble getting back into a boat.

Over the years, Musher has taught me one thing: on the water, it's better to anticipate than to struggle.

Decathlon and sporting dogs: technical equipment

What I like about Decathlon's approach is that the brand doesn't try to make "cute" accessories for dogs. It stays true to its core mission: equipping athletes – from weekend warriors to seasoned pros – with technical, practical, and affordable gear.

After dog walking harness and bathrobe, X-Back traction harness, dog backpackThis new dog flotation vest follows the same logic: allowing dogs to accompany their humans on their outdoor adventures, this time on the water.

What I wanted to understand:

  • ❓ Why did Decathlon choose this shape and color?
  • ❓ how buoyancy had been conceived;
  • ❓ Why were there two handles?
  • ❓ On which dogs had the product been tested?

This is where the part I love begins: the behind-the-scenes design process.

Behind the scenes at Decathlon: how was this dog flotation vest conceived?

Before this dog life jacket Before arriving in stores, Decathlon started with a very concrete product brief:

👉 What do I want to do with my dog?

👉 How can I help him if he gets tired?

👉 How do I get it back on a paddleboard or in a canoe?

👉 How to offer a simple, useful and accessible product?

Behind this brief, there was a study of dog owners, a user manual, prototypes, field tests and laboratory validations.

The project began approximately 3 yearsand it took nearly 2 years of development to arrive at the final vest and find it in store!

Decathlon orange dog flotation vest, perfectly fitted to the dog

One project team, multiple areas of expertise

Behind the scenes at Decathlon, several profiles worked together:

👩‍🎨 Design

Julia worked on the shape, colors, graphics and ergonomics of the product.

📐 Model making

Novels worked on the pattern of the vest to adapt it to the morphologies of dogs.

🌊 Nautical Expertise

The teams Starboard contributed their expertise on buoyancy, foams and water safety.

🐕 Field tests

Test dogs of varying sizes and builds validated the product in real-world conditions, under the watchful eye of Michael, product manager.

Even the colors weren't chosen at random. The vest incorporates visual elements similar to Decathlon's nautical ranges, particularly the Tribord line, with colors designed to be consistent with the equipment used during nautical activities.

In short: the dog is integrated into the Decathlon outdoor and nautical world, like a true activity companion.

Buoyancy: the major component of development

Naturally, for a dog life jacketThe foam is the heart of the matter. But what I discovered is that everything is much more precise than one might imagine.

With the support of the Tribord teams, the team worked on the quantity of foam, its density, its location and its thicknesses according to the areas of the vest.

In particular, there was a lot of work done on the underside of the neck, to help the dog keep its head above water, and on the chest/belly, to support the body without blocking swimming.

The goal was not to turn the dog into a rigid buoy, but to find the right balance between buoyancy aid and freedom of movement.

The teams even carried out buoyancy tests in the laboratory to validate the prototypes.

Once the first prototypes were ready, it was off to the field, particularly around Lacanau. The dogs were observed swimming freely, paddleboarding, and canoeing, both with and without life jackets. The team even filmed them above and below the water to analyze their posture, swimming, and the actual buoyancy assistance provided by the product.

The tests confirmed:

🐾 if the dog floated correctly;
🐾 if the vest stayed in place;
🐾 if the movements were natural;
🐾 if the dog could swim without hindrance;

The tests also confirmed an essential point: humans can really help their dogs get back on a paddleboard or in a canoe, without hurting them and without struggling.

Behind-the-scenes bonus: the Redji anecdote

A little anecdote that I loved during the interview: Redji, the English setter belonging to Michael, product manager at Decathlon, also participated in the tests.

Redji isn't the world's greatest swimmer. He wasn't exactly comfortable in the water. But once he was wearing the life jacket, he regained his confidence.

For me, this is exactly the kind of feedback that speaks for itself. This isn't just a product for dogs who already love water, like Musher. It's also equipment that can help some dogs feel more comfortable, provided, of course, that they are introduced to it gradually.

My field test with Musher: the Decathlon vest versus my old models

After the behind-the-scenes glimpse, it's time for the real test: the water, the moving paddleboard, the wriggling dog… and the human trying to get back up 34 kilos wet without ending up in the water herself.

With Musher, I've already tested quite a few dog flotation vests From highly technical models to more basic vests, from very reassuring to attractive but not particularly practical ones. So when I test a new vest, I quickly look at the details that really matter on the water.

👀 Visibility

  • ✅ Color easy to spot in water
  • ✅ Reflective strips useful early in the morning or at the end of the day
  • ✅ Reassuring if the dog swims far

✋ Two handles

  • ✅ A really good idea to help the dog climb back up
  • ✅ Better weight distribution than with a single handle
  • ✅ Less of a "blockage" effect when helping the dog from a paddleboard or canoe

🛟 Buoyancy and comfort

  • ✅ Vest that helps the dog without hindering it
  • ✅ The swimming motion remains natural and fluid
  • ✅ Essential size and adjustments according to the dog's morphology

💦 Practical details

  • ✅ Drainage holes for easy water drainage
  • ✅ Quick drying
  • ✅ Easy rinsing after the sea or sand

My favorite feature: the two handles

Most of the vests I've tested so far have only one handle on the back. This is handy for grabbing the dog, but not always ideal for helping it back onto a paddleboard or into a canoe.

With only one handle, the dog's weight can tip backwards: the vest rises, it pulls towards the neck, the front comes out of the water but the rear remains below… in short, it creates a bit of a cork effect.

With the two handles of the Decathlon vest, the grip is more logical: one hand in front, one hand in back, and you really guide the dog instead of hoisting it up like a wet bag of kibble.

With Musher and his 34 kilos, I endorse this idea 2000%.

Where does it fit in relation to my old vests?

Will it replace all the vests I already use with Musher? Time will tell.

I liked its simple, practical, well-thought-out design, with real useful details for the field: the highly visible color, the reflective strips, the two handles to help the dog get back on more easily, the drainage holes for drying… And above all, I like the fact that it allows more dogs and humans to enjoy water activities together, without necessarily breaking the equipment budget.

For me, this is a vest that is very suitable for pet parents who want to practice the paddle boarding, canoeing, boat trip or bathing with their dog, with a budget well spent.

It's not just for ultra-sporty dogs. It can also be suitable for family dogs, dogs discovering water activities, dogs who swim well but need to be made safer, or those who need a little help to feel more comfortable in the water.

Bonus gear: my nautical kit with Musher
