For this new article, I wanted to take you in soft roaming, along two mythical rivers of the southwest: the Lot and the Dordogne.
These valleys are a concentration of everything I love: shaded paths, picturesque villages, impromptu swimming, and above all… that feeling of total disconnection while drifting with the water.
This is exactly the kind of place I dream of taking Musher to! I actually had the chance to explore the Dordogne during a holiday with my parents, and I recently repeated the experience with Musher because, for the past few months, I've been assisting the Dordogne Valley tourist office with its application for the Destination QUALIDOG label. I'll tell you more about it at the end of this article.
For this selection, I kept my essential criteria : pleasant trails for walking in the shade or along the water, no tricky sections for dogs (ladders, steep stairs, etc.), a peaceful atmosphere, far from crowded spots, and hikes for all levels . There needs to be something for everyone: families as well as seasoned athletes.
Before setting off, always remember to check local conditions, the weather, dog regulations in the area, and the trail conditions. A good hike with your dog is one that requires some preparation… especially when it's hot.

This journey begins on the banks of the Dordogne River , in a gentle, bucolic atmosphere nestled between cirques and cliffs. This shaded loop follows the river, crosses meadows, and invites you to enjoy relaxing breaks with your paws in the water . Easy terrain, peaceful ambiance: it's the perfect walk to gently ease into your holiday with your furry friend.
🐕 Great for dogs who love swimming and leisurely walks.
🎒 Good gear tip: when heading to the water's edge, like Floirac, remember to keep a towel or a dog bathrobe in the car. After a swim in the Dordogne, your trunk will thank you.
- 🏰 2. Dordogne Valley in Castelnaud

📍 Start Point: Castelnaud Aachen (Dordogne)
📏 14,7 km | ⏱️ 5h10 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Moderate level | ⛰️ Elevation gain: 338 m
An iconic hike in the Périgord Noir region , with views of Castelnaud Castle and the tranquil curves of the Dordogne River. The trail winds through wooded areas, clearings, and offers some superb panoramic views. And there's always something to cool off your dog. Located along the Dordogne River, halfway between Bergerac and Rocamadour.
💡 Best avoided in the heat of the day, but perfect early in the morning or in the evening for a magnificent sunset over the Dordogne.
🎒 Good gear tip: On a longer outing like Castelnaud, with almost 15 km on the clock, be sure to check the comfort of the harness before setting off. If your dog pulls or walks well ahead of you, a cani-hiking setup with a pulling harness , elastic leash, and waist belt will be much more comfortable for both of you.
- 🌄 3. Breath of fresh air in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

Crossing to the Lot River and one of France's most beautiful villages, this scenic hike offers spectacular views of the valley , forest paths, and occasional open sections to admire the river and the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. A truly picture-perfect scene, to be enjoyed in any season.
🧙 A must for lovers of heritage and unspoiled nature. No swimming during the hike, but before and after: the Lot River awaits you!
- 🏡 4. In the shade of the cazelles
🟥 Near the Lot, on the Célé
📍 Start Point: Marcilhac-sur-Cele (Batch)
📏 6,5 km | ⏱️ 2h15 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Easy level | ⛰️ Elevation gain: 158 m
A peaceful, rural stroll through the Lot countryside. Cazelles, dry-stone huts, punctuate the trail, which winds through woods, low walls, and meadows. Plenty of shade and few people: a treat for quiet dogs (and their humans).
Before leaving or on your return, as a reward, take a dip in the Célé, the river that flows through the village.
🐾 To be done in the morning with a small thermos of coffee, or in the evening to end the day well.
🎒 Good habit to remember: between woods, low walls, meadows, and small paths, be sure to check your dog's paw pads and coat when you get back. In the Lot region as in the Dordogne, ticks can quickly become a painful holiday memory. Make sure you check your dog's parasite prevention.
- 💧 5. Waterfall and medieval treasure in Autoire
🟥 In the heart of the Lot
📍 Start Point: Autoire (Batch)
📏 5,8 km | ⏱️ 2h50 | 🔁 Loop | 💪 Moderate level | ⛰️ Elevation gain: 411 m
We end on a high note in one of the Lot's gems. Autoire, a listed village, hides an impressive waterfall at its heart, also known as the Reculée d'Autoire, accessible via a wooded and shaded path. The route climbs slightly but remains pleasant and perfectly doable with your dog. A great way to combine heritage and a refreshing escape . Along the way, you'll discover the highest waterfall in the Lot (30m) and the Château des Anglais, a relic of the Hundred Years' War.
💡 The waterfall is a real favorite for curious dogs and dreamy owners.
🎒 Good gear advice: in Autoire, the trail climbs a bit and the terrain can be more challenging. A small first-aid kit in your bag is always a good idea: an irritated paw pad, a small cut, a foxtail, a misplaced branch… it's often these little injuries that spoil long hikes.

⚠️ What you need to know about hiking in the Lot and Dordogne with your dog
Between the trails overlooking the Lot and the shaded banks of the Dordogne, hiking with your dog in this corner of southwest France is a real joy . But as always, to ensure everything goes smoothly, there are a few rules to know 🐾
🐕 In the majority of cases, dogs are allowed on a leash on hiking trails, whether in the Lot or the Dordogne.
But be careful: some sensitive sites, such as Natura 2000 areas, the nature reserves or the very touristy areas, may have their own restrictions. Always check before you leave.
🥾 In summer, the climate can quickly become very hot , especially on plateaus or exposed trails. 👉 Opt for early morning or late afternoon walks, bring plenty of water for your dog , and avoid long outings when the temperature rises.
🌿 The terrain may seem easy, but ticks are definitely present in the area. Don't forget to use appropriate flea and tick prevention and check your dog's coat after every walk, especially after walking in the woods or meadows. Musher is a black dog, and let me tell you, finding ticks is a real struggle… Often, when we get back from a walk, she gets the full treatment: a brushing and a flea and tick treatment!
🐛 There are also processionary caterpillars in the Dordogne. Between February and June, avoid walks among the pine trees and pay close attention to what your dog sniffs.
