This one-week itinerary is designed for an athletic couple and dog. Indeed, your dog must also be in good physical condition to keep up with the rhythm of this week full of adventures. However, if you enjoy hiking with your dog but want to take it easy, it's entirely possible! You can, for example, spread a hike planned for half a day in our itinerary over the entire day.
Day 1 - Warming up around Nantua
We're starting slowly but surely this week in Haut-Bugey! For the first day of your itinerary, discover the surroundings of the town of Nantua with your dog. Its lake, its cliffs, the surrounding plateaus are simply splendid, perfect for doing sports!
In the morning, I suggest:
- un passage toHaut-Bugey Tourist Office, which is located in Nantua. You will receive a welcome kit designed for your vacation with your dog! A travel notebook filled with Trop W'ouf addresses and advice will be given to you, so that your stay in the region with your dog is wonderful!
- a hike around Lake Nantua. You can tour this magnificent lake, sometimes sapphire blue, sometimes emerald green, with your dog. Allow 1h30 for 7 km, unless you stop to swim with your dog!
For the lunch :
- Restaurant L’Embarcadère will welcome you with your dog! For a meal with a view of Lake Nantua 😍
For the afternoon :
- I suggest you take the height with the hiking Fècles tower. The climb is gradual and will offer you a magnificent unobstructed view of the town of Nantua, its lake and its green valley. During these 9 km in the mountain, you might see a herd of chamois! Stay discreet, and do not hesitate to hold your dog on a lead to avoid disturbing them. 😉
Day 2 - Higher level hikes in Nantua
On this second day of the route in Haut-Bugey: it's going to sweat! I suggest you stay in Nantua, but take it to the next level with your dog.
The morning :
- hiking "The mountains of Ain", difficult level. Walk these 13 km with your dog. If you are very sporty, you can also do it in trail mode ! Very quickly, you will arrive at a magnificent panorama. Take the opportunity to admire the view of Nantua, Les Neyrolles and their gigantic viaduct.
Noon :
- lunch in front of Lake Nantua, in the restaurant At Father Durdu's
The afternoon :
- is : cani-paddle on Lake Nantua. After working your legs all morning, your arms will heat up this afternoon! A water sport with your dog in this magical place, the dream!
- is : stroll in the town of Nantua, which is full of surprises. The heritage discovery tour will reveal its cultural, gastronomic and architectural gems. Explore this famous Haut-Bugey town on foot with your dog. You will know everything about the history and geology of this exceptional place thanks to the explanatory panels.
Day 3 - A day of challenges in Oyonnax
On this third day in Haut-Bugey, I suggest you go up the Lange valley. This is an essential stop on your itinerary: Oyonnax and the incredible Gorges de l’Enfer. Dizzying, they challenge the imagination and are definitely worth the detour!
For the morning:
- hike around Oignin, the river that passes through the Gorges of Hell. 8 km of medium level to explore places of pure authenticity. Admire the power of nature with your dog. You can even admire the ruins of a Gallo-Roman temple in Izernore! Departure next to the Intriat dam in Izernore.
For lunch, I suggest:
- Either: Au Moulin du Pont restaurant, in front of Oignin. It is located at stage 8 of your morning hike, after 7 km of walking
- Either at the golf Club House, your afternoon stop
A chill afternoon:
- a initiation to Haut-Bugey golf course, a dog-friendly golf course ! You can exercise there with your dog on 9 courses without necessarily being licensed. Plus in a magnificent setting on the banks of Lake Samognat!
- and stroll in the town of Oyonnax, looking for frescoes. They proudly illustrate the city's past, closely linked to the Resistance from 1940 to 1944.
Day 4 - Trail to Lake Genin
I couldn't design an itinerary in Haut-Bugey without telling you about Lake Genin. Nicknamed “the little Canada of Haut-Bugey”, you will discover that it lives up to its name!
In the morning, I suggest:
- the first part (6 km) of the trail route n°9 of Lake Genin. If you like it cani-trail, you will love this course! There are two peaks to pass before reaching Lake Genin, but the level is not difficult.
- or a orienteering with your dog in the Oyonnax forest. Find these routes on the banks of the Sarsouille.
For mid day :
- With all the sport you do, you've earned the right to swim in Lake Genin ! Your dog will be delighted!
- Then, picnic at Lake Genin, the BEST place to picnic with your dog!
The afternoon :
- le interpretive trail, which does a little more than the Genin Lake Tour, will be perfect for a digestive walk. Depending on your pace, this will last 45 minutes to 2 hours. The panels retrace the 7000 years of evolution of the landscapes and vegetation around the lake.
- then it's back to the 6 km remaining of the trail course. You still have a nice climb before going down 300 m in altitude. Breathe in the good smells of fir and spruce with your dog as you wander through the forests ????
For dinner :
- you deserved your meal at theLake Genin Inn, a dog-friendly place!
Day 5 - Discoveries around Neyrolles
This fifth day of the one-week itinerary in Haut-Bugey will amaze you! I'll let you discover it, but the best will of course be to see these wonders with your own eyes. 😉
For the morning, I suggest:
- la visits Sylans coolers, large stone buildings built in the 19th century to store ice. In fact, this was taken from the Lake of Sylans, right next to it, when it had frozen. And the good news is that you can visit the exteriors of these unique old factories in France with your dog!
- and walk on the Colliard loop trail: 4 hours round trip with 500m of elevation gain from Les Neyrolles. The Roche Carrelet belvedere is well worth the climb 🤩
Noon :
- picnic at the start of your next stop, in Montréal-la-Cluse
In the afternoon, we resume hiking!
- la hiking Sails of Landeyron. The Landeyron is a very pretty river. Between waterfalls and “giant pots”, large pools of water, your dog will have plenty to swim in! Warning: keep your dog on a leash as you will sometimes gain height. In winter or after a heavy rain, a ford crossing may be covered by the river, so you will have to turn around. 5,3km for a 2h15 walk with 223m of D+
Day 6 - Hiking in Brénod
Let's go for this sixth day with your dog in Haut-Bugey! And I guarantee that these stages of your itinerary will turn out to be Wow!
The morning :
- hiking on the 3 waterfalls circuit of the Brénod plateau. Forest, streams and waterfalls will lead to a pretty viewpoint over the village, with an orientation table.
For the lunch :
- Restaurant la praille in Plateau d'Hauteville welcomes you with your dog. Dishes using good local and seasonal products await you!
The afternoon :
- a hike from the statue of the Virgin of Lacoux, in the village of the same name. You will find theitinerary by clicking here. 8 km of forests and remarkable viewpoints to discover with your dog. Be careful, the Grand Sangle circuit requires all your vigilance: you must keep your dog on a leash because there are faults, crevices and the belvedere is not at all secure (no barriers)… Amazement guaranteed in front of the most beautiful landscapes of Haut-Bugey!
Day 7 - Nordic walking on the Hauteville plateau
It’s already the last day of our one-week itinerary in Haut-Bugey! And we continue to discover the region’s jewelry while doing sports! The sport in question? Nordic walking, but always with your dog 
For the morning:
- warming up on the Nordic walking route at the Mélogne waterfall. A magical route, ideal for breathing the pure air of Haut-Bugey. The Mélogne waterfall will offer you the perfect break for a very, very cool swim with your dog!
Noon :
- lunch at theFerme Guichard inn, where a meal in the heart of the forest awaits you!
For the afternoon :
- Nordic walking or mountain biking with Michel Flochon. This sports coach offers group or tailor-made adventures. A way to intimately discover Haut-Bugey while working on your body! And of course, you can participate with your dog! Departures are from Brénod, Plateau d'Hauteville and around.
