Day 1 - Amiens

Amiens
Hortillages
@Helene Atton

I suggest you start this week of roaming holidays across the Somme by Amiens and its famous hortillonnages.

  • the hortillonnages are a haven of nature in the heart of Amiens. True floating gardens, the area extends over 300 hectares of garden and 67 km of rivers (canals).
  • You can explore the area on foot while traveling through this circuit 7 km starting from Saint Pierre park, dogs allowed. The circuit runs along the towpath along the Somme.

Lunch break :

  • this is 3 dog-friendly restaurants where to eat in Amiens: L'Estaminet, the Quay or the Manger;

The afternoon :

  • canoe trip in the hortillonnages. Rent a canoe at Rivery nautical club and go explore this natural space with your dog. You can leave completely independently or choose to follow an accompanied guided tour.
  • You can also explore the Garden of the Virtuous, less than 10km from Amiens. It is a landscaped garden where you can discover market gardening techniques and above all go by boat, with your dog, to discover the area.

Day 2 - Bike ride or horse ride

horseback riding with a dog

For this second day in the Somme, I leave you the choice between a bike ride with your dog or a horseback ride with your dog. It's up to you to choose your ideal frame. These 2 activities take place near Cappy.

For this day, I offer you 2 rooms: 2 atmospheres!

  • horseback riding option : if you love horseback riding and so does your dog, choose the horseback riding option in the Somme. Michel de Somme horse riding, in Pont-Noyelles, offers you day trips discovery of the Somme Valley. Michel offers tailor-made tours and will take you to discover places of memory of the Great War, to the viewpoint of the Sainte Colette cliff, in the marshes of the Somme…. Michel is used to walks accompanied by a dog but if yours is too sensitive, he can stay sheltered in the stable. To do with him.
  • cycling option: from Cappy, you can rent a bike and a dog bike trailer at Cappy Bike Rental to explore the Somme Valley Cycle Route. You can test the Froissy-Péronne portion. Along the way: the Frize lock, the Frize belvedere. On arrival: the Historial de la Grande Guerre, but be careful, the site is not authorized for dogs.

Day 3 - The mountain of Vaux and Péronne

Belvedere of Vaux
@Nicolas Bryant

Péronne is known for the Great War Memorial. But not only ! After your walk on the Vaux mountain, head to Péronne for a guided tour.

To start the day off right, I suggest:

  • a 8,5km hike to gain a little height! The departure is from Eclusier-Vaux. A lovely hike that will take you to the belvedere, from where you can admire the panorama of the Haute-Somme valley, the land of ponds and marshes. Enough to stock up on pure nature! here is hiking map and GPX tracks. Allow 3 hours of walking.

For the lunch :

To continue this day, I suggest:

  • to discover Péronne! Unfortunately, you will not be able to discover the Great War Memorial with your dog... So I have a plan B for you: either one of you visits the Memorial while the other visits Péronne following the Péronnaise hike, or you discover Péronne together! Audio guide download to your mobile

Day 4 - Le Ham and Montdidier

Ham

canoeing on the Somme with a dog
@Nicolas Bryant

This time, I suggest a bit of canoeing! And a nice hike to enjoy the Confidential amount

To start the day off right, I suggest:

  • a canoe trip in calm waters or sometimes faster from Ham. There are several loops from 2 to 15km. This is the perfect activity for dogs who love water. However, bring your life jacket and a microfiber towel to dry it after the activity. Go to the Ham nautical base for a canoe or even cani-paddle session if you prefer.

In the afternoon, I suggest you take your van back to join Montdidier 45 minutes away.

  • a hike awaits you! THE Ayencourt Waterfall circuit is a 4 km shaded hike accessible to all. Your dog will love swimming in the Trois Doms river or under the waterfall.

Here ends the discovery of the eastern part of the Somme department. For the rest of your road trip with your dog, I suggest you head back towards Amiens to reach the Bay of Somme and end in apotheosis on the last day!

Day 5 - The green flow

the green flow
@Nicolas Bryant

Unable to offer you a special travel itinerary Confidential amount and nature without telling you about the famous Green belt

On the agenda for the day:

  • a hike in the heart of nature ! Dominant color: green! 17km of paths that get lost in the forest or along the river at the bottom of the Selle Valley. You will walk on an old railway track. Departure from Bacouel-sur-Selle and arrival at Monsures. Plan a taxi to bring you back to your starting point. It's an easy hike and accessible to everyone because it's completely flat. And if you want to do everything on foot, here are two maps of the Coulée verte route ! You will find 2 possible routes (shorter) and everything you need to remember to prepare your day with your dog.

Day 6 - Long and the Grand Laviers reserve

Long in the Somme

Before discovering the Bay of Somme, I offer you a half-land, half-sea day !

To start the day off right, I suggest:

  • to join Long and its castle. The visit to the castle is dog-friendly, but it is only open in July and August. The rest of the year, you will have to content yourself with admiring its reflection in the Somme, and it's magical! here is hiking map : 8km to discover the marshes and the banks of the Somme with your dog. You can also discover the Longpré marsh with its beautiful walks between ponds, reed beds, meadows and wooded marshes. It is not a swimming area strictly speaking, but it is a natural area where you will find a little freshness. Ideal for summer with a dog!

For the lunch :

As I told you, this day will take you to the sea! After having lunch in Abbeville, I suggest you:

  • join the rGrand Laviers ornithological reserve to discover the entrance to the Bay of the Somme and its birds. Here 3 circuits are available: from 45min to 2h30. It's impossible to take you to the Parc du Marquenterre, a mecca for bird lovers, because this nature reserve is closed to dogs.

Day 7 - The Bay of Somme

Ohoh today, for this last day of vacation, I suggest youexplore the Bay of Somme. that is how end this road trip in a van across the Somme in style. Marshes, forests, Somme valley, river... the Somme reveals its last secret to you today: one of the most beautiful bays in the world.

To end the road trip week in the Somme well, I suggest a hike not to be missed under any circumstances (except the tide):

  • crossing the Bay of Somme walk. With a little luck, you will even be able to see the famous seals of the Bay of Somme. Leave accompanied by a nature guide specialist in the Bay of Somme. It will give you lots of information about the fauna and flora.
  • Depending on the season and the tide, it is possible to go there or back by small steam train. THE Somme Bay Railway accepts dogs on board!
  • You will necessarily go through Saint-Valery-sur-Somme for this hike. I therefore recommend a stop at Foodtruck La Baie Les Waffles. A gourmet moment that should not be missed!

This week ends here, but if you still have a few days of vacation ahead of you, I advise you to explore the Bay of Somme with your dog. Did you know: there is a special itinerary The Bay of Somme with a dog with many ideas and activities to do together. Created for parents and their children, it is suitable for everyone, W'ouf course. It's a good source of inspiration to extend your vacation.
