A WE with my dog in a converted car
Hey fellow dog lovers! I'm so happy to be back with you today! After sharing our family adventures in Portugal with our dog and my favorite spots around my home in the article "What to do in and around Millau with a dog ," I'm thrilled to be back today to share our latest adventures in Spain. As always, my dog was with us! He's a full-fledged member of our family, so he always comes on vacation with us. And, as I've already mentioned in my previous posts, he loves traveling in our converted Kangoo. He hogs the entire back seat! A real king!

Three stages for this weekend with our dog:
- Congost de Mont-Rebei : from Montfalco, a mix of hiking and kayaking
Hike with passages on wooden footbridges "projecting" from the cliffs, on a path dug at human height in the rock in the narrowest part of the canyon, on a small suspension bridge over the river...
Kayak to access the heart of this nature reserve and “double” the hike on incredible turquoise waters
Is this for all dogs? It's just huge to share this adventure with your dog: footbridges, kayaking, hiking in height... to end up with your paws in the water to crunch the waves! Happiness !
Musher and Sophie: “ Wow, that sounds amazing… However, it’s definitely not an adventure for Musher. My dog has terrible vertigo. She’s capable of putting herself in danger because she panics so much. When I have to get through certain tricky sections, I put her in her emergency harness and carry her across on my back. But with 32 kilos on my back, I can only take a few steps; not a whole hike! So if we ever discover this area together, we’ll “settle” for discovering this majestic site from the water. After a stroll in Tossa de Mar , explore the small coves and beaches of Fornells , not far from Begur. The beaches here are dog-friendly, especially between the Port of Fornells and Platja Fonda.
So we traveled with our fitted vehicle, a small Kangoo fitted out by us. Small but sufficient for sleeping. The "car" format goes everywhere, allows us to park everywhere and above all to access wild corners, in the heart of nature. Be careful, access to Montfalco and Finestras is via more or less chaotic tracks depending on the sector (especially towards Finestras). No road, few indications. Great sense of direction!!!
Dogs are accepted on the trails as well as by canoe-kayak rental companies. Good to know !

Spain: dog-friendly country?
Is Spain a great country for holidays with your dog? Let's say that from the experience I've had, I can simply say that dogs are accepted on the terrace, very few inside... which isn't really a problem given the climate...
And that there are “two” Spains: in the Mont Rebei reserve, the Spaniards were very benevolent, rather accommodating with our dog Tsingy but on the Coast, on the other hand, I felt that the dog (and therefore us) was not welcome. Some small ports or waterfronts are even forbidden to dogs, it is also very clearly indicated with prohibited signs.
To travel with your dog in Spain, he must be:
- identified (chip or tattoo)
- vaccinated against rabies (up to date)
- in possession of a European passport.
The leishmaniasis vaccine is recommended. The muzzle is often requested.
Be aware that this area of Aragon (bordering Catalonia) is very hot and the hikes can be stifling. The period March-May seems to me the most interesting to have a good level of water, no strong heat and few people.
Musher and Sophie: “ In hot weather, there are a few things to know to avoid heatstroke , which can be fatal for our dogs. I always equip Musher with a cooling vest or jacket for dogs on every outing in the summer. I wet her down before we leave, and she puts the vest on. Laetitia's advice for a weekend in Spain with her dog
For your excursion to Mont Rebei: So bring water and a bowl for your companion because the air is very dry and the area wild and isolated.
For canoeing, book in advance and specify that you have a dog so that the rental company can adapt the canoe/kayak to be delivered to you. For me, the departure from the Auberge de Montfalco is the most interesting route.
In June, the waters of the Congost de Mont Rebei were already very good; little risk of hydrocution and ideal for refreshing your nose and legs!
A little anecdote: The Riu Noguera Ribagorçana at the Congost de Mont Rebei is full of fish. Especially with the black bass, big bugs over 40cm tall that intrigued Tsingy… who couldn't resist going to sniff them along the bank and then swim with them!
