How to get to the island of Ouessant with your dog?
Getting to Ouessant Island with your dog is easy , whether you choose the boat or the plane. While both options are possible, I recommend the boat , as it's more suitable and often less stressful for dogs. Of course, this depends on individual circumstances!
🛥️ The BreizhGo Penn Ar Bed ferry company operates year-round crossings to Ouessant from Brest and Le Conquet . Small dogs transported in a basket or bag travel free of charge. Larger dogs are also accepted with a special ticket costing €6 return. During the crossing, all dogs must remain on a leash and are not allowed on the seats. Category 1 and 2 dogs are also accepted, provided they are muzzled.
I advise you to provide a collapsible bowl and some water for your pet, especially in summer.
If your dog is prone to motion sickness, also avoid giving it its meal just before boarding.
✈️ You can also reach the island by plane with Finist'Air, departing from Brest. Small dogs and cats are accepted in a suitable carrier. There is a supplement of €7,50 if you use your own carrier or €13,50 if one is provided by the airline. Flying is a good option if you want to save time and know your dog will be comfortable.

The most beautiful walks on the island of Ouessant with your dog
Ouessant Island is an ideal destination for nature lovers who want to share as many activities as possible with their dog. What I love most here is the peace and quiet! The raw, wild nature. You're forced to be humble in the face of the elements. It puts you in your place, I think. It feels good!
🥾 Hiking is a must . The complete circuit of the island follows a coastal path of approximately 38 kilometers , exclusively reserved for pedestrians. Cliffs, heaths of heather and gorse, fine sandy beaches, dry stone walls, lighthouses and the famous black sheep of Ouessant punctuate this magnificent walk.
I recommend dividing this route into four sections of about ten kilometers each, resulting in hikes of 3 to 4 hours. This way, you'll discover the island gradually, while adapting the distances to your dog's abilities.
If you only have one day, focus on the northwest part of the island . Pointe de Pern is, in my opinion, the most spectacular area, with its enormous granite boulders, rugged cliffs, and panoramic views of the Iroise Sea. Fun fact: it's also the westernmost point of mainland France!
From Lampaul , I recommend a hike of approximately 10 kilometers to Pointe de Pern and then to the Créac'h lighthouse . This route offers a superb first glimpse of Ouessant and its iconic landscapes. Remember to keep your dog on a leash in protected natural areas.
🚴 Cycling is also a great way to explore the island . You can bring your own if your ferry crossing allows it, but for a day trip, renting is often a better option. The rental company La Bicyclette, for example, offers dog trailers , ideal if your furry friend can't keep up the whole way.
🛶 If you have your own equipment, taking your canoe or paddleboard out is the ideal way to explore the coast from the sea at your own pace and with your dog. It's the perfect opportunity to share a wonderful water activity with your dog independently, simply making sure your companion wears a suitable life jacket for safe navigation.
After all those walks, there's nothing like a break by the water to let your dog cool off. And if you're as lucky as I was, you might see some seals bobbing in the water to catch their breath or sleeping on their backs, belly up in the sun.
Dog-friendly beaches on the island of Ouessant
Good news: all the beaches on the island of Ouessant are dog-friendly! Unlike many coastal destinations, you can therefore enjoy the seaside with your companion throughout your stay.
You will be able to discover, among other things:
