Mary and her dog

My name is Marie, I hold theCaen Castle hotel which has been located in the city center for 5 years. Before, I was in human resources and I wanted to change jobs while maintaining human contact.

When I was little, I always had dogs on the farm where I lived. There was a neighbor who had a Yorkshire, this dog fascinated me by its miniature side, cute and with character. It was my dream to have one later!

When I left home with my parents, I had my first Yorkshire called Eliot, a little skinny 3-month-old male; at his adult height he weighed only 2kgs. Eliot was exactly as I had seen him in my dreams. We were very close and we shared a lot of good times. Eliot was always there for me. When I had my children, Eliot was never jealous, but he only saw through me. Eliot left us at the age of 15. It was a lot of grief.

Shortly after, we decided to adopt a new dog. I wanted the same dog, a Yorkshire, we went to a kennel to choose him, always a male and it was my husband who wanted to choose him this time. He took the chubbier one, which also looked smarter. So we called it Tip. When he was little, Tip was so chubby his belly almost touched the ground. As an adult, Tip had a lot of character. He didn't like being left alone, when that happened he would push the trash can over to overturn it and shred everything. When Tip came by car, he barked all the time at the start of the ride because he was happy. During our walks, he often had to choose where he wanted to go. And the worst part is that when he didn't want to come in, he would turn around and drag his legs.

When I took the hotel, Tip came with me and he was the hotel mascot. In the morning, Tip was happy to come, he waited outside the door and he barked when I wasn't going fast enough!

Tip started having breathing problems in September 2019 and he left us at the start of 2020. I decided not to take a dog back because with my schedules at the hotel it was becoming complicated on a daily basis. But luckily I see dogs very often as they are welcome at the hotel.

Discover Caen with your dog

I will now introduce you to Caen! The city of Caen was 75% destroyed during the Second World War. It is a city that still has a lot to show for it. During your walks you can discover Norman houses, old mansions, a castle, churches and historical monuments.

The historic heart of Caen is located in the city center. You can discover the city thanks to a pedestrian route accompanied by your dog.

Let's start with a historical tour of Caen!

To allow you to discover the city of Caen with your dog, we will leave from the Abbaye aux Hommes, created by William the Conqueror in 1063, you will pass in the rue Ecuyère, to go in the rue Froide with its bookstores and its small independent shops. You will also discover the Saint Sauveur church to then arrive at the castle, also damaged by the ravages of time and war. However, what remains of the castle is beautifully highlighted, thanks to its moats, the Saint Georges church and its ramparts. From the castle, there is a view of Caen and the church of Saint Pierre which is sublime. You will exit from the back to arrive at Vaugueux, one of the most picturesque districts of Caen. Between its small cobbled streets, its restaurants and its half-timbered houses; this district will be an essential stop on your visit to Caen with your dog. You will continue the walk to the Abbaye aux Dames, founded by Mathilde de Flandres, the wife of William the Conqueror. You can discover the Church of the Trinity and stroll through the Ornano Park. At the end of the park is a magnificent cedar of Lebanon planted in 1849.

Where to walk your dog in Caen?

The city of Caen is full of magnificent green spaces. Indeed, during your visit you will discover:

  • Garden plants : A plant and botanical garden 10 minutes from the hotel, in the heart of the city. Collections of rare plants on more than 5000 m2 of green spaces for strolling.

  • La Prairie : This is the runners' paddock. Horse hooves aren't the only ones treading the racetrack. La Prairie is a piece of countryside in the heart of the city just 10 minutes from theHotel du Chateau.

  • Le Lebisey wood in Herouville-Saint-Clair: Concerning this little wood, dogs are rather well accepted without a leash. In the evening, there are quite a few joggers, walkers or bikers.

  • La tip of the seat in Ouistreham: it is a calm and wild place. This site is a nature reserve mixing beaches, plains, and woods where you can observe some birds but also rabbits and seals. So be careful that your dog knows the reminder or that he is kept on a leash.

But that's not all. Caen being located at the edge of the ocean, you will have the chance to be able to take your dog to the beach because the shore to landing from Pegasus to Utah Beach are allowed to dogs:
