Friends today I present to you Pica and Leticia! A duo Wouafement Bien that tells you everything about a destination that is too W'ouf: The Jura!

The February holidays are fast approaching: the perfect opportunity to spend a few days in the snow with your dog ! It's not always easy to find a dog-friendly ski resort … But fear not: Pica and Léticia share their top tips with us.

Let me introduce you to Pica and Leticia to begin with. Leticia is a young Belgian woman who travels with her Alaskan malamute called Pica in a small camper van (named Mery :-).

She previously worked as an assistant manager in Luxembourg City. She wanted to settle there but as too many obstacles got in her way…. So she decided that, "damn for damn", she was going to travel a little to take life on the bright side 🙂

Leticia and her dog, a magnificent Alaskan Malamute

A friend of mine had one! I really fell in love with this breed of dog. The malamute is a rather special breed, a primitive dog, therefore a little more “wild” because it is closer to the wolf, stubborn like a mule, but extremely kind. He has no aggressiveness and is absolutely not a guard dog. They were originally babysitters, they love them.

I looked for and found a breeder in Charleroi, Snowy Twilight, where I bought my little Pica. My little ball of love was born on November 15th. He was with two other male puppies when I first went to see him at the breeder but had the distinction of being the most gluttonous (like his mistress) and fell asleep on my lap when I gave him a cuddle for the first time.

So I fell for him and 5 weeks later, he landed at home!

I then decided to raise him in alternative education (without any violence). On the food side, I cook for him by reducing the croquettes as much as possible.

Being a big dog I can't take him everywhere with me… I was thinking of leaving him outside tied up while I was working but I quickly realized that he was probably going to be stolen or worse. So I ordered a huge cage and I will continue the rides (3-4 hours per day minimum) as soon as I can.

The Jura: a great destination for holidays with your dog

Going on holiday in the Jura with your dog

After several trips aboard Mery, I decided to join a friend in the Jura Mountains with my dog . He also has snow dogs. Eventually, I quickly found a job there and decided to settle down.

I went camping with my dog to stay mobile and avoid the hassle of finding accommodation with him (always very difficult). I speak from experience…

Pica is my first dog, so I'm learning everything along the way…

There are quite a few hikes to do with a dog in the Jura which are super fun. I recommend :

  • Le lac des rousses (2-3h to go around but a wonderful day to have fun with your dog 🙂
  • The Hérisson waterfalls (an afternoon, I really recommend!)
  • The waterfalls of the Langouette (1 hour)
  • The tuff waterfalls with the town of Baume-Les-Messieurs.
  • Lac de Joux (Swiss side – 1 day)
  • The Risoux forest
  • Balm gentlemen. Super village, super waterfall of the tuffs! The village is magnificent, to visit with your dog!

For dog-friendly restaurants in the Jura region :

  • Le Refuge (Les Rousses) Very good restaurant that welcomes dogs!
  • The workshop (Bois d'amont) has a great kitchen and a really nice welcome for you and your dog.
  • For bars:
  • The Patio (Les Rousses) with terrace at the back for your doggie. Great atmosphere and continuous snacks!
  •  La Bonbonnière welcomes dogs inside, but I visited the place less because the atmosphere didn't really suit me (that said, it's still very nice).

Léticia's best memory with her dog

Go to the Jura with your dog

My fondest memory was the first day of snow, when my dog started running around like crazy! It was magical to see him so happy!

My worst memory was my stay at a dog-friendly hotel where I spent the night. Everything went very well, but the staff seemed exhausted.

The unfriendly boss… I really got the impression of false warmth from him. So even though dogs are welcome there, I don't recommend it.

I went on vacation once without my dog ; it was to Japan. I left him with the breeder I'd bought him from. Everything went well, but I missed him terribly. Even though it's not always possible to travel with your dog, it's just too hard when he's not there. Now my dog always goes on vacation with me; it's a thousand times better with him!
