In winter, I love going to the mountains with my dog, seeing her rolling around in the snow, running, going, coming back, digging… Musher could put on a show for us for whole days! A real clown. As many of you also appreciate the snow and the mountains in winter, this winter I have decided to present several dog-friendly resorts for a successful holiday with your dog. So you will have a wide choice of destinations for your snow holidays with your dog! Too Wow, right?!
After'Alpe d'Huez with a dog, I invite you to discover the beautiful resort of Megève. It seems that this ski resort is rather dog-friendly… Right Leika and Elodie? These two Wouafer's have tested the resort for you and they tell you all about their experience in Megève, but also about the dog-friendly activities and accommodation they have been able to test...
The meeting between Elodie and her dog: obvious!
My name is Elodie, I'm 29 and I'm a dog trainer. So I have the chance to do a job that I am passionate about every day. My dog's name is Leïka. It's a magnificent samoyed 4 years old. More than my dog, it's my daily buddy at home and at work. But especially my little clown! Always happy, she's a real ray of sunshine. If I'm a bit down, she knows how to cheer me up. Leïka is also a great gourmet. And, believe me, she knows how to make sensitive souls crack… A very insistent look with her soft eyes followed by a very soft “ahouuuuuu” and that's it!
The first time I saw my dog was at her kennel. We chose the Samoyed for several reasons. I have always been fascinated by primitives. My husband much less. So I tried to find a breed that could capsize him and we both fell in love with the Samoyed. A favorite that was confirmed during the first visit to the breeding. Teddy bears full of love, so kind and with that smile… you can't help but fall in love with them. The breeder gave us a lot of information about the breed, its needs, the character… It totally suited us. The "stubborn" side did not scare us. Being stubborn myself, I thought we would make a pair!
When we arrived in the room where the puppies were, the breeder left us with the 5 females of the litter. We wanted a female and we were the first to choose from the litter. 5 small white balls all as crunchy as each other. They were only 5 weeks old. But one stood out above the others. Our little baby wolf. It was her and not another! It was very hard to leave without her and to have to wait a few weeks before coming back to pick her up. It seemed like an eternity to me.
Since my dog arrived home, I have tried to share as many things as possible with her. Thanks to her, I discovered sublime places. What I love is going for a walk with her, just the two of us, in a place we don't yet know and letting ourselves be guided by our desires, in the present moment. We are lucky to have right next to the Fontainebleau forest which is beautiful. It's our favorite place to recharge our batteries.
What to do in Megève with your dog?
Our dog follows us for the holidays. Recently, we went as a family to Megève in the Alps. Discover the Alps with sound dog, it's really great. In addition, we did not know this area yet and wanted to discover Megève which had been recommended to us to reconcile the desires of skiers and hikers 😉
And right on target! We were delighted with our stay in Megève with our dog! A sublime city, breathtaking landscapes and the bonus (not insignificant) our dog was able to come with us EVERYWHERE! The resort of Megève is really dog-friendly. Our dog even took the gondola with us! It was the “Princess” gondola. There is a magnificent viewpoint at the very top at 1822 m altitude, we stopped there for a few minutes to admire the view. It was magical !
After this short break, we went down to “The intermediary of the princess gondola” where the start of several hikes is located. And off we went for a 2-hour hike at an altitude of 1 m.
Musher and Sophie: “At this point, I would like to do a little health update with you. Take advantage of winter sports holiday with sound dog, it's really a crazy experience! But I would like to draw your attention to the fact that it is very important to properly equip and protect your dog in the mountains to avoid going to the vet in the middle of the holidays...
When I take Musher to the mountains in winter, I leave with a few essentials:
harness and longe to ensure her safety in the mountains and keep an eye on her close to me.
Du Solipat, a tonic for pads to use to prevent snow and salt from damaging his paws.
Boots also called dog boots when we go for long hikes in the snow, they allow, in fact, to relieve the pads attacked by snow and salt
Un dog coat which protects it from gusts and the biting cold of the mountain
For his comfort, but also especially ours: his anti-odor shampoo !
luminous necklace, essential for our night walks in the snow. By the way, I tell you more about reflective accessories in the article: “Testing of luminous and reflective accessories"
💬 I'll interrupt your reading for 10 seconds, but it's for a very useful piece of information, I promise!
Pet food, vet visits, holidays, equipment… The dog budget is becoming a real money pit, isn't it? It's unbelievable!
With Musher, we've been working for you: the Wouafer's Pass gives access to Over 30 negotiated discounts, including Corsica Ferries, Campings.com, SantéVet and dozens of discounted pet food brands 🐾 Personally, I'm going to save €344 this year… and that feels good!
I'm including the link to Wouafer's Pass here… and I'll let you continue reading
On the way back, we stopped to eat in a mountain restaurant located right next to the gondola. Leïka was very well received and even had the right to her bowl of water. We have done several cani-randos including two magnificent ones that I advise you to Combloux.
The first: the Route des Intages. There was a lot of snow, the fir trees were all white, we walked along a stream before crossing it, surrounded by all this sublime nature. A moment out of time. A little further on is a farm with cows that have come to say hello to us. To find out more about the hike from the Intages road.
The second, on another slope, near La Cry in Combloux, at the start of the chairlifts. At first we walk along the ski slopes and then we find ourselves in the middle of nature, the landscape is really magical. See others hikes to do in Combloux.
In both cases, we had rented snowshoes for cani-racket. I think that without them the hikes would have been more complicated, but otherwise they are accessible to everyone. Even kids, we had our 2 year old son with us (although he didn't walk the whole way haha).
Musher and Sophie: “After finding out about the resort, I am pleased to inform you that ALL footpaths in the resort of Megève are authorized for dogs. Phew! What happiness! I think it's rare enough to be specified 😉 In addition, dogs are also allowed in all ski lifts provided of course that they are kept on a leash. Keeping your dog on a leash is very important, a little reminder in the article: “Why should you keep your dog on a leash ?
Note that in the resort of Megève, dogs are prohibited on the ski slopes. On the other hand, you will be able to enjoy beautiful walks and hikes in private, in the resort and on the marked pedestrian paths with your dog 😉
Last but not least, the ski resort of Megève has set up a file of petsitters available in the resort. Smart for your ski days and for the activities that you unfortunately cannot share with your dog! Great initiative that deserves to be highlighted. Thanks to the Megève tourist office for this information. “
In any case, I recommend this destination which has delighted us all. The city of Megève is really very pretty. At night, I find it even more beautiful with all the illuminations. The surrounding villages are also pretty and typical of Haute-Savoie, you can also visit them. As for family skiers, they were not left out with the resort's superb ski area with more than 130 runs. Downhill skiing, ski touring, forests, sunny terraces, there really is something for the whole family. I assure you that no one will be bored... In short, a destination which, I think, can meet everyone's expectations, including hairy people 😉
