🚩The Cévennes with your dog: reminders and regulations

The Cévennes National Park is a protected area. Therefore, you must respect certain rules when hiking there with your dog:

  • In the “core zone” of the park, dogs are not allowed to roam freely. Your dog must therefore be kept on a leash for the peace and quiet of the wildlife and plants, as well as the livestock;
  • Speaking of herds, you're likely to encounter Pyrenean Mountain Dogs (Patous) guarding flocks of animals throughout your hikes. For more information on how to behave around Patous, you can consult our article. Hiking with your dog: survival guide for dogs.
  • Bivouacking is permitted in the core area, but only in specific sectors and during defined time slots: you must not be more than 50 meters from either side of the marked trails (GR, GRP) and for only one night (between 19pm and 9am).
  • Do not litter. You must keep your waste with you throughout your hike and dispose of it in the first bin you see.

I've already tried bivouacking in the Cévennes with Musher, and I can tell you it was quite an experience. We had a blast. We hiked the 4000 steps to the summit of Mont Aigoual. The views were breathtaking, and our legs were working up a real sweat… And if I had to give you one piece of advice from my own experience before you go, it would be to check the weather forecast! The area ranges from 117 meters in altitude in Anduze to almost 1700 meters at the summit of Mont Lozère, which means it's close to a mountain climate up there. The weather can change quickly, so it's best to be well-equipped, summer or winter. We did our trek in July, and although we had anticipated the heatwave, we quickly ran out of water, and it almost ended in disaster… Musher was equipped with a dog cooling jacket But without water, the equipment is practically useless, and all the streams were dry. The end of the hike felt endless, I can tell you. So, second bonus tip: take precautions with your water supply in the summer!

💬 I'll interrupt your reading for 10 seconds, but it's for a very useful piece of information, I promise!  :smile_smirk:Pet food, vet visits, holidays, equipment… The dog budget is becoming a real money pit, isn't it? It's unbelievable!
:index_to_the_right: With Musher, we've been working for you: the Wouafer's Pass gives access to Over 30 negotiated discounts, including Corsica Ferries, Campings.com, SantéVet and dozens of discounted pet food brands 🐾 Personally, I'm going to save €344 this year… and that feels good!

You gradually hear the sound of the water before reaching the waterfall, and it's always a magical moment. Your dog can easily cool off when you arrive, with a swim possible at the base of the falls.
