A few weeks ago, we left Oï and Marie to continue their adventures in Cape Verde. Leaving for a world tour by sailboat, Marie and her dog regularly stop in the most beautiful places in the world. Marie adopted Oï a few months before their big departure. Oï has taken a hell of a revenge on life! It is with great pleasure that we find them again for episode 4 of their great adventure: heading for the Antilles, Colombia, French Polynesia… On the way to a cabin boy!

Life on the boat for Oï

Before starting to tell you about their new stage of travel, it's not too late to read or reread the previous episodes of their journey: departure2 episode in the canary islands and 3 episode in Cape Verde.

Let's go back a bit to talk about equipment… Before leaving, Marie had to adapt the boat so that her dog was safe there. Some adaptations had to be made, such as installing a net all around the boat so that Oï could not go overboard in the event of turbulence. Marie and her companion congratulated themselves several times on having installed it! This prevented Oï from falling into the water.

During the last episode, they were in Cape Verde. Since then, they have passed through the West Indies and then Colombia. Then they crossed the Pacific! 28 days at sea! That Oï has obviously lived well. As with each crossing, each day, they devote time to playing with him, stimulating him. They play ball but also hide and seek, play treasure hunts, teach him tricks, etc. Marie told us that they had to go and retrieve the ball that had gone overboard. A great opportunity to review “man overboard” maneuvers.

The West Indies and French Polynesia

They arrived in French Polynesia via the Marquesas archipelago. Impossible to clean the dog because there is no veterinarian on the 6 islands of the archipelago! At each of their stopovers, Marie has to get Oï done with papers so that he is allowed to disembark. This time, the gendarmes allowed them to disembark with Oï because the dog was up to date with his vaccines. Phew! Once they arrived in Papeete, they were able to do the paperwork. A very long and expensive process: €200 for a stamp after Marie.

In the West Indies, they were faced with an unexpected problem… Chickens!! Oi is completely obsessed with chickens and can't help chasing them when he sees them. The problem is that they are everywhere according to Marie!! In the street, in the houses, in the restaurants, at the town hall... In short, it was impossible to free Oï who therefore had to stay on a leash most of the time.
So that he could spend himself, they had to find plans B such as walks off the beaten track. The hens living close to the men, as soon as they moved away from the villages, they crossed much less. In Polynesia, there are also many motu. These are tiny islands that are often uninhabited and on which they were able to detach Oï without fear of cars or chickens. If they really couldn't untie him, Oï exert themselves by swimming: from the boat to the shore, from the shore to the boat… He who was afraid of the water when they adopted him is now an excellent swimmer!

In the other archipelagos of Polynesia, they were confronted with another problem: other dogs. In most of the countries they visited so far, there were a lot of street dogs, but often of small or medium size. They were not aggressive and welcomed Oï with curiosity without animosity because they had no territory. Polynesians are crazy about dogs. Mostly Pit Bulls and Argentinian Dogs. According to Marie, they are completely on their own, wandering in the street. They fiercely protect their territory. Marie and her companion have got into the habit of walking around with a stick and pebbles to scare off any dogs that might come and annoy them. Most of the time they are afraid of men, but not always. They therefore sometimes found themselves in quite distressing situations! Except for Oï who is focused on the chickens and NEVER sees danger coming! It's quite hopeless… Marie met a Brazilian couple traveling with their bull terrier. They were severely attacked by three big dogs in Tahiti. Poor Fejão, their dog, got away covered in bites..

Obviously there are also very positive things for Oï who discover lots of things every day. In Nuku Hiva, in Anao Bay, he was very intrigued by the small blacktip sharks swimming between his legs. He also discovers the joys of tropical fruits which he loves, especially coconut. A dream dog's life!

Next steps: Chile and Patagonia

After their adventures in the warm seas, Marie and her little family are on their way to Chile. A 30-day navigation during which they will go from 30 to 5 degrees. They wonder if Oï will have time to make a fur warm enough to face the southern seas or if they will have to equip it with a coat. They are happy to continue their adventure. In Patagonia, at least, they will no longer be bothered by chickens! However, there are plenty of penguins. They can't wait to see Oï's reaction to its new neighbors. And me too.
