The Baie de Somme, Saint Valery-sur-Somme and opposite Le Crotoy, which Alain Souchon even sang in his song Âme fifties… a destination that is certainly worth a few days of vacation with all your family and your dog. The Bay of Somme is one of the most beautiful bays in the world, recognized for its great ecological wealth. This is THE place to be in the Somme. It is an exceptional natural site where the sky and the sea almost merge at certain times of the day. The Baie de Somme has kept its wild side and that is why the bay has become a real sanctuary for millions of migratory birds who stop here for a few weeks to recharge their batteries and that a colony seals have been living there for several years! There are no concrete coasts here, the seaside has managed to preserve its wild aspect.

Leaving these dithyrambic presentations that make you want to open the trunk of your car, throw in three clean underpants and your dog to discover the Baie de Somme, let me offer you a practical article on what to do in the Somme with your dog and where to book dog-friendly accommodation in the Somme with your dog?

In this article dedicated to discovering the Baie de Somme with your dog, you will also find valuable information on Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the two emblematic resorts of the destination. Here I share with you the best tips for discovering these two cities as a family with your dog.

Go Somme with your dog!

Visit Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy with your dog

To discover the entire Bay of Somme with your dog in a few hours, I share with you a first good plan: the Somme Bay Railway. This is an activity to do with your dog in the Baie de Somme. This is the opportunity to travel aboard historic trains, on the old “Réseau des Bains de Mer” and discover the whole bay in a “Belle Epoque” atmosphere. You will be able to discover and visit the seaside resorts of Cayeux-sur-Mer, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy. Note that there are also cycle paths that stop in the stations served by the little train. So you can absolutely, if you have your own equipment, mix a piece of the route by train with your dog and discover the rest of the route by bike with your dog. In particular, you can take the bike path called le tour de la Baie; it is the one that runs the furthest along the coast.

Let's start the discovery of the Bay of Somme by Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. This little medieval town will please you, I'm sure. Discover Saint-Valery-sur-Somme with your dog. Strolling through the narrow streets of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme you can discover: the Guillaume towers, the old fishermen's quarter known as the "Courtgain" with its small colorful houses with flowery facades, the Porte de Nevers, the high ramparts and the watchtowers, half-timbered houses, cobbled streets... There is an air of the Middle Ages floating around the alleys of Saint Valery-sur-Somme. And then, once you've explored the old town from top to bottom, take a walk along the seawall, the Quai Jeanne d'Arc towards the beach. For safety reasons, your dog must be kept on a leash throughout your trip to Saint Valery-sur-Somme. A little later in the article, I prepared a selection of walks and hikes to do in the Bay of Somme where your dog can roam freely to enjoy the sea.

Departing from Saint Valery-sur-Somme, you can discover the bay by boat with boats in the Bay of Somme. If I'm telling you about it here, it's because it's a dog-friendly activity: dogs are welcome on board. This is a great way to discover the bay and its riches through a guided walk. Depending on the outing you choose, you can even see the seals up close! And besides, be aware that there is also the possibility of crossing the bay by boat and returning by small steam train (which I told you about just above). A 100% accessible day with your dog!

Let's cross the Bay and discover Crotoy. Always in the company of your dog, W'ouf race! Many nature guides offer discovery outings of the bay on foot. There are 3 starting points for these walks: the Crotoy locks, Pointe du Hourdel for seal watching or Maye beach. But be careful, your dog will not be able to come with you if you choose the exit which starts at Maye beach because this beach is located in the Bay nature reserve and it is therefore an area completely prohibited for dogs, even kept in leave alone. The Crotoy tourist office has worked for you, my dear Wouafer's, since they have created a special guide for tourists who come with their dog. You can find this little guide here. It will be very practical for you to choose a restaurant where to eat mussels and fries, a must in local gastronomy. The Bay is home to a few mussel farms, known as bouchot mussels. It would be a shame to miss out on a good bowl of mussels! Eating out with your dog? Do you need some tips to make this outing go well? Read or re-read the article Go to a restaurant with your dog.

Strolling through the narrow streets of Le Crotoy with your dog, you will discover the fishermen's houses of this former fishing port which was one of the most important in the Channel. The long sandy beach is the only beach in the North to face south.

Around Le Crotoy, you can also discover the Rambures castle with your dog. In the 15-hectare park, labeled “Remarkable Garden”, you can observe: a rose garden with more than 510 varieties, the herb garden, of medieval inspiration, made up of geometric beds with useful dyeing, medicinal and aromatic plants, a collection of ferns, a conservatory orchard and an arboretum. All dogs, even categorized, are welcome with their masters. Only small dogs carried in your arms or in a dog backpack will be able to visit the interior of the castle. It's a great place to visit with your dog in Picardy!

If the Parc du Marquenterre, a fabulous ornithological reserve, is not authorized for dogs, even on a leash, you can discover the ornithological reserve of Grand Laviers with your dog. That the fans of birds are reassured, this natural space is also magic. It is a natural area of 40 hectares located 5 minutes as the crow flies from the Baie de Somme. On site, there are 3 circuits offered from 45mins to 2h30. You can walk freely on the site or choose a guided tour with a nature guide who will share his love for nature and introduce you to the fauna and flora of the reserve.

Walk in the Baie de Somme with your dog

What to do in the Bay of Somme with your dog?! The flagship activity is the nature walk, the hike! You don't need anything other than a good pair of shoes or boots to enjoy this magical space. Of course, you can enjoy the beach and the joys of bathing with your dog, but you can also discover other more natural spaces such as the sandbanks covered at each tide and the expanses of grass called "mollières" where graze quietly huge herds of salt marsh sheep.

But watch out for areas that are forbidden to dogs. The Baie de Somme being a protected natural environment, some areas are not allowed to dogs. The Baie de Somme nature reserve is strictly forbidden to dogs. This is the space located at the Parc du Marquenterre. The nature reserve which covers the Maye beach in front of Le Crotoy is also not authorized for dogs, even on a leash. Outside these two areas, you can go for a walk with your doggie and enjoy the beauties of the bay as much as you want!

Do you want to enjoy the beach with your dog? Please note that in Crotoy, dogs are prohibited on the beach area in front of the houses. They are allowed on a leash from Allée de la Grève for 2km to La Maye beach, which is strictly forbidden to dogs since it is a nature reserve. A little further north, dogs are allowed on the beaches of Quend-plage and Fort-Mahon-plage if they are kept on a leash and only outside the supervised bathing areas.

What would the Bay of Somme be without its colony of seals?! You absolutely have to go see them but stay at a very good distance. They are wild animals that deserve your respect. You can observe them with binoculars but it is strictly forbidden to disturb them.

The best place to observe the seals of the Baie de Somme? The tip of Hourdel accessible from Cayeux-sur-Mer! The walk starts from the Mollière car park towards Le Hourdel. Plan 2 hours of hiking with your dog through the dunes, the pebbles and the sea. Your dog like you are going to enjoy yourself!

Another way to discover the Baie de Somme with your dog is to cycle through it. The Baie de Somme by bike is 160 km of cycling circuit including 51 km of cycle path. There are 9 discovery circuits which all bear the name of a bird such as the avocet, the heron... You can discover all the cycling circuits of the Baie de Somme on the website of the Baycyclette. And besides, be aware that the maritime bike that connects northern Brittany to Belgium necessarily passes through the Baie de Somme! Didn't take your bike on vacation? Rent a bike and a dog bike trailer and discover the many bike circuits that exist all around the Baie de Somme. I investigated for you and found a few bike rental companies who also rent bike trailers for dogs or children but they are happy to lend them for a ride with your dog. However, these child trailers are not dog bike trailers, only small dogs or medium-sized dogs are accepted (up to 20 kilos). Here are the few rental companies that I have spotted: David Sport / Avovélo / Les clapes de la mollière / Les locations du canal.

I advise you to call them in advance to reserve the equipment because in the middle of the tourist season, bike trailers are very popular!

Only a rental company is equipped with a bicycle trailer specially adapted for dogs and which can support a dog up to 40 kilos. This is the rental company Garage de la baie.

If you have never cycled with your dog, I advise you to read or reread the article Cycling with your dog to prepare for your outing.
