Table of contents

Today, dear Wouafer's, I wanted to introduce you to a dream destination, ideal for your holidays with your dog: Croatia! I had the chance to discover this beautiful country almost 10 years ago on vacation. I keep magical memories. But since I've never been there with Musher, I couldn't tell you what it's like to travel with your dog in Croatia. I'm going to hand over to Caro and Cosmos, our 2 Globetrotters road trip fans. For those who do not yet know this duo of adventurers, I invite you to discover their Portrait Wow Good.

Caro and his dog went on vacation to Croatia in June 2018 and they happily share their advice and their Too W'ouf addresses for an exceptional family vacation in Croatia. I let you discover their holidays…

The trip to Croatia of Caro and his dog

Cosmos and I went to Croatia in June 2018, as always, in mode road trip. We crossed Italy from the Mont-Blanc Tunnel to Triste. It takes 40€ for the tunnel, and 80€ for the toll in Italy. We took the opportunity to stop in Venice. For Croatia, as it is part of the European Union, no need for specific vaccines or documents. A passport, an electronic chip and up-to-date vaccinations are sufficient. On the other hand, they do not yet have the Euro.

Croatia is one of the most dog friendly countries we have visited. Please note: Croatia is VERY hot. Mid-June, it was already 38° at noon.

Visiting Zagreb with my dog

We camped near destination in  Camp Zagreb. Arrived in the middle of the afternoon, we took advantage of the lake on site and the huge field of the campsite to play. Cosmos let off steam. Fortunately, because during the night, we faced a violent storm with impressive hail. I can tell you that we were happy to be in the car and not in a tent. The next day, it was still raining downpour and the weather was not looking better for several days. So we left for Zadar to continue the holidays in Croatia with my dog.

Visiting Zadar with my dog

We camped at Camp Borik. Only 40 minutes walk from the Old City of Zadar. This campsite is great because it has direct access to the beach. In Croatia, there are pebbles everywhere, there is hardly any sand. Dogs are welcome, outside the summer period. When we were there, there was hardly anyone there and the campsite is HUGE. So, early in the morning and at the end of the day, because of the heat, I took advantage of letting go of Cosmos and he could run after his little balls as he pleased. It was the right plan to let off steam without disturbing him, and for him to be safe.

To reach Zadar, we followed the seaside. The route is very beautiful. To do in the morning, because then it's very hot and there's no shade, not great for the dogs... We also came back by Uber to save his little paws, at 4€ the race, I don't wasn't going to bother me. It is a very beautiful city, steeped in history. It can be visited in about 2 hours.

Visiting Krka National Park with my dog

Then we visited the krka national park. It was my dog's second birthday, right on our vacation in Croatia. I wanted to mark the occasion and offer him a nice excursion, in addition to the gifts that I had hidden in my belongings.

The park is 60 km from Zadar. We must leave the car in the village, then take a boat for 20 minutes, trip included in the entrance to the park. On the spot, a circuit of approximately one hour makes us discover magnificent Croatian waterfalls. The must ? You can swim at the foot of the main waterfall. As Cosmos was scared and so was I, I put his dog life jacket on the boat and I left it for the ride, because wet it does not weigh much, but helps to cool my dog.

Musher and Sophie: “In the article Canoeing with a dog I explain the importance of the life jacket for your dog, information to know and remember :)“

Visit of Split to avoid with my dog

To continue my vacation with my dog in Croatia, direction Split. We slept at Camping Strobec Split. This campsite has its own dog beach and a dog shower. We didn't really have a choice since it's the only campsite near Split. Dogs are not allowed on the bus, so we drove to Split. It takes about 20 minutes. This town is definitely not dog-friendly. I don't recommend it. All the buildings to be visited are forbidden to dogs, even small ones that are in a bag. Besides, Cosmos got heat stroke on the spot, and I couldn't get him to drink, despite stopping at a bar and ordering a Coke for me. Fortunately, I have some experience. I emptied the ice cubes from my glass and gave them to him to suck. The trick was played.

Musher and Sophie: “As Caroline's experience shows, heatstroke is indeed very dangerous for our doggies and can lead straight to disaster, it is important to know how to react, I'll tell you about it here: Heat stroke: how to protect your dog? "

Visiting Dubrovnik with my dog

We slept at the Solitudo Sunny campsite. In 2018, it was the first time the city allowed dogs on buses, as long as they were in a bag. Otherwise, the campsite is a 40 minute walk from the old town.

Being a big fan of Game of ThronesDubrovnik was close to my heart. We spent 5:00 on site with Cosmos. There are very beautiful viewpoints, stairs in all directions, and it is possible to go around the city on the heights of the walls. Again, it was very well received. I decided, for once, to have dinner at the restaurant there. And well imagine that Cosmos was entitled to his own chair and that we brought him water before even saying hello to me. It was very appreciable by this Croatian heat!

Visiting Crikvenika with my dog

À Crikvenika, in the very north of Croatia, there is even a dog beach, with a dog bar. At Monthy's Dog Beach, you can buy pizza, chips and dog beer. We tested, of course, and we loved it. Take a chicken-flavored beer and toast with your dog, it's to do once in your life! Me, I chose to do it during my vacation in Croatia with my dog 🙂 and you?

Road trip in Croatia with my dog

To sum up, Cosmos and I A-DO-RER the our vacation in Croatia. So much so that we have already planned to return, because we still have a lot to discover. Croatia is a very dog-friendly country. Dogs are not only accepted, but also welcome and welcomed everywhere except in Split. At each “dog-free” beach, there is an “authorized” one a few hundred meters further. This is THE destination that I recommend for a first trip with his dog. In addition, there are veterinarians everywhere, it's very reassuring when you have a daredevil dog like mine 🙂
