Are there any beaches that accept dogs in the Province of Barcelona? in the province of Tarragona? and in the province of Girona? Find here the beaches accessible to dogs in Catalonia for a successful holiday in Spain with your dog!

In this section:

Known for its heritage rich in history, music and art, Catalonia is located in the North-East of Spain. Also renowned for its heavenly seaside landscapes and the Pyrenees massif, it is a perfect destination for discovering, with your dog, a new culture and new natural spaces.

This destination is also great for enjoying the beaches. Are you wondering which Catalan beaches are allowed for dogs? Indeed, finding a beach worthy of the name and which accepts dogs is not an easy task. That's why I did my research and prepared a list of beaches that accept dogs in Catalonia!

Catalonia is made up of 4 provinces. It is home to the provinces of Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona and Lleida. Today we will not talk about the province of Lérida because it does not run along the Spanish coast and therefore does not have a beach.

Before we go any further, I want to point out that regulations regarding dogs on beaches can change from year to year. Indeed, certain beaches may become accessible to dogs and other beaches may instead put in place new restrictions for our four-legged companions. Even if I regularly update the information in the Mag' articles, I advise you to check the information a second time before going to a location with your dog.

Beaches in the province of Barcelona

  • Llevant Beach : In the heart of Barcelona, this sandy beach reserves a space for our doggies. It has a shower and a water fountain intended for dogs. There is even free parking, which is quite rare in a big city like Barcelona.
  • Cala Vallcarca Beach : Halfway between Sitges and Barcelona, this sandy beach is only accessible by car. However, it has free parking where you can find space even in summer. There are no restrictions on dogs. The beach Cala Vallcarca, which looks wild, is not supervised and has no showers.
  • Salines Beach : Located in the town of Cubelles, in the province of Barcelona, Salines beach allows dogs. Fences and a washing cabin have even been put in place for our doggies. Although the area dedicated to dogs is relatively small, this beach still remains a haven of peace for our dogs.

Advice from Musher and Sophie : In general, dogs pant in order to regulate their body temperature. However, the heat can be quite complicated for some dogs (like us humans), especially for long-haired dogs. This is why I use the Swamp Cooler refreshing jacket from Ruffwear for Musher.

  • Sant Vicenç de Montalt Beach : This small beach of blond sand is well maintained. Dogs are allowed there without worries. There is a shower as well as a dog fountain. The only downside is that this beach is very busy, especially during the summer period. If your dog is introverted or if you want to find a space in the parking lot, I advise you to get there early enough.
  • Ribera Beach : This pebble beach is calm and soothing. In fact, it is not too busy, which is a real asset for a Spanish beach. She accepts dogs without worries. Located in Port de la Selva, this semi-urban beach offers sublime sunsets thanks to its special location. Free parking is available to visitors and swimmers.

Beaches in the province of Tarragona

Tarragona is one of the four provinces of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. It is located in the south of Catalonia and is home to a large number of beaches.

  • La Platjola : Located next to Els Muntells, this large beach accepts dogs. Fairly uncrowded, you are sure to enjoy a moment of tranquility and calm on La Platjola beach. You can find shady spots under pine trees.
  • Cala Bon Caponet beach : This pebble beach is located in the town of l'Ametlla de Mar. It welcomes your doggies without any problem. There is often algae and the water is not always very clean. This beach can, however, be a good play area for our doggies.

Advice from Musher and Sophie : Most beaches provide fountains. However, this is not the case for all of them, especially for wild beaches or those far from the city. I therefore advise you to bring the special travel bottle from Trixie. Dehydration can occur quite quickly in a dog during hot weather, particularly because he cannot express his needs verbally. So remember to quench your dog's thirst regularly!

  • Beach per a Gossos : Located in the town of Cambrils, this beach accepts dogs. Showers are also intended for them. It is shaded and has free parking. The downside is that there are many rocks, which can be dangerous for small dogs.
  • Bassa De l'Arena Beach : The town of Riumar has set up this beach for our furry friends. Made of sand, it is ideal for your dog to run around and let off steam. The water is clean so no worries about swimming. A chiringuito is present if you want to have a drink or something to eat. You will also find parking right next door as well as showers and toilets.

Beaches in the province of Girona

The province of Girona is one of the four provinces of Catalonia. This province is rich in culture thanks to its numerous medieval villages and its large monasteries without forgetting the archaeological site of Empúries. You can also follow in the footsteps of the artist Salvador Dalí through the three towns of Figueres, Cadaqués and Púbol. The province of Girona is also rich in natural spaces. Indeed, it is home to the Garrotxa volcanic zone as well as the Cap de Creus natural park.

Find the beaches accessible to dogs in the municipality of Girona!

  • Sant Jordi Beach : Located in the municipality of Llançà in the province of Girona, this beach accepts dogs without problem. This area made up of fine sand and rock is quite small. In fact, it measures approximately 50 meters long and 10 meters wide. There are rocks in the water, so I advise you to bring suitable shoes if you want to swim. This beach is easy to access and known for its cleanliness. When you leave, be sure to leave it as clean as when you arrived.
  • Rubina Beach : Located between the towns of Empuriabrava and Roses, this family beach has a large area of fine sand. Apart from its dog friendly commitment, Rubina beach is also known for being home to the best chiringuitos on the Costa Brava. A chiringuito is a small establishment set up temporarily and typical of Spanish beaches. Chiringuitos are mainly dedicated to selling drinks as well as food, ideal for eating while staying at the beach.
  • Estartit Beach – Els Griells : As indicated in its name, this urban beach is located in the municipalities of Estartit and Els Griells. This beach has almost 600m2 of space, is ideal for an afternoon with your doggie. There you will find chiringuitos, hammocks and parasols... in short, a heavenly setting. Pedal boats with slides and kayaks are available for rental. I have not been able to find out if dogs are allowed on board the pedal boats and kayaks. If you have the information, please let me know. Parking at the beach is free, which is always a real plus. Ps: Be careful when swimming on this beach because there can be a certain number of jellyfish depending on the tides and seasons.

Advice from Musher and Sophie : To the delight of vacationers, Spain is a very sunny country. In general, when we expose ourselves to the sun but want to protect ourselves from sunburn, it seems natural to us to wear sunscreen and sunglasses. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for our four-legged friends. However, dogs can indeed get sunburned and hurt their eyes due to too much exposure. There exists the Dermoscent sunscreen for dogs. To protect your eyes, you can use dog sunglasses. It can be complicated to get a dog who is not used to them to wear them, but with perseverance, most dogs adapt completely to wearing glasses.

  • Les Portes beach : This beach in the town center of Colera is made up of pebbles. Special shoes are therefore recommended in order to be able to enjoy the rocks without hurting your feet. On the other hand, you will be able to benefit from clear and transparent water. There is ample free parking and showers nearby.
  • Port de la Vall Beach : Located next to Port de la Selva, this beach is at the other end of Punta de la Lloia compared to Ribera beach. The advantage of this pebble beach is that it is quite wide, which leaves the necessary space for your dog. Swimming is pleasant there; However, remember to bring shoes suitable for pebbles as well as a safety jacket for your dog.

  • Niu cove : There is a small sandy area in this cove. Access is complicated and is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. For swimming, there are rocks and quite a few sea urchins. In addition, the parking lot is a 10-minute walk away. I still share this beach with you because it is one of the rare beaches that accept dogs and some vacationers sometimes have no choice. The water is clean but not ideal for swimming.

  • Platja Pere Grau : Located in the town of Palamos, this small pebble beach is allowed for dogs. However, it is not an ideal beach because you can find capsules or even pieces of glass on the ground, which is very dangerous for our doggies' pads. Bring shoes either for you or for your dog to make sure you don't get hurt. There is no shower or toilet.
