Hello Wouafer's. Today, I'm taking you to the Somme! Follow me to discover Amiens and its region. The Hortillonnages, the cycle route of the Somme valley, the Saint-Leu district, the fabulous cathedral of Amiens, the nautical base of Rivery... I'm not sure that a single weekend in Amiens with your dog will be enough for you to explore everything! You will have to come back.
Amiens is a surprising destination that has more than one asset up its sleeve. Whether it's for a rejuvenating weekend between nature and slow tourism or for a cultural weekend, you'll love your city break in Amiens with your dog .
Amiens: for a nature getaway with your dog
Subway-work-sleep.. Stop! Take your dog on board and come and get some fresh air in Amiens!
Amiens, capital of the Somme, is only 1 hour from Paris by train which makes it a perfect destination for a weekend with your dog.
You can also come to Amiens by bike. Amiens is crossed by the Somme Valley Cycle Route, a 160 km route that crosses the entire Somme from Ham in the far east of the department to the Baie de Somme, on the Picardy coast. Cycling with your dog: this is a great experience to share together.
Well arrived in Amiens with your dog? Here are some ideas for activities to share with your dog in Amiens for a nature weekend. And in the next paragraph, I share some ideas for a cultural weekend in Amiens with your dog. It's up to you to pick from all these suggestions to make your ideal program.
And I start with the Hortillonnages, the floating gardens of Amiens. 300 hectares of garden for 65 km of rivers, the canals that irrigate the gardens: a real natural setting in the heart of the city. You can absolutely enjoy this natural space with a guided tour of the Hortillonnages by boat with your dog. Your dog is welcome on board during the visit. And for those who want to try the experience independently, you can absolutely rent a canoe with your dog at the nautical base of Rivery and explore the link at your own pace. And if you don't want to row, you can opt for the electric boat option. Restaurant O Garden on the towpath offers the rental of electric boats authorized for dogs. Just like the restaurant for that matter! An important clarification from the Wouafer's: the international garden festival – Hortillonnages Amiens is not accessible with your dog because it is located in the Hortillonnages d'Amiens in the middle of a protected natural area.
If you don't have sea legs, here are some other ideas for activities to share with your dog in Amiens and its surroundings. I recommend a walk on the towpath, on foot or by bike with your dog. It's a nice walk along the water. Take the towpath to the Hortillonnages via the Canardière circuit: this is a very nice bucolic section to do according to the Amiens tourist office.
On the Amiens side, I also recommend the Jardin des Plantes with your dog. Dogs are allowed on a leash. It's ideal for a little green break. Parc Saint-Pierre is also authorized for dogs on a leash. The + of this park? Its free orientation course to do with the family, enough to discover lots of things about the surrounding nature. The Parc de la Hotoie is also ok for a walk with your dog, on a leash W'ouf course.
So much for Amiens, but there are many other natural spaces that are worth the detour to share a good time with your family and your dog around Amiens.
And after your stroll in Amiens, head not far to Saisseval to discover the Aure Park ! This is a dog park with a
swimming pool and numerous games and facilities located on 3000m² in the heart of nature
. The dog training classes, specific training are also offered and dog event regularly organized.
And if you're more into hiking with your dog, opt for a nice walk in the forest! Between the national forest of Creuse, the Bois Magneux or that of Fau Timon in Cottenchy, there is plenty to do to enjoy a good outing in the forest with your dog.
Amiens: heritage and history to cultivate yourself in the company of your dog
Before showing you the beautiful things to see and visit with your dog in Amiens, here is a selection of QUALIDOG-labeled accommodation in Amiens and its region. Once you have booked your dog-friendly accommodation, all you have to do is prepare your weekend programme.
Amiens is known for its hortillonnages but also for its magnificent cathedral. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral is a jewel. Unfortunately, you will not be able to visit it with your dog. Like all religious buildings, this one too is forbidden to dogs... But I advise you to go for a walk on its square and look up, the spectacle is worth the detour. And as for the show, I recommend the show “chroma, the monumental experience”. It is a sound and light show which enhances the facade of the cathedral every summer evening, in July, August and September, and during the Christmas market. Your dog probably won't understand anything but he can accompany you!
During your strolls in Amiens with your dog, go and observe the belfry, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Perret Tower. 110 m high, with its 30 floors, it was for some time the tallest skyscraper in Europe. A building that you can hardly miss, especially if you explore the city at night. The tower displays the time day and night in the sky of Amiens.
A passage through the Saint-Leu district is mandatory. Crossed by the arms of the Somme, the Saint-Leu district was born in the Middle Ages. Its narrow streets full of colorful houses and its designer boutiques, its market, its restaurants by the water... and moreover, if you are passing through Amiens on the first weekend of September, the festival "Les Médiévales au bord water" is to be done! The Saint-Leu district goes medieval.
Amiens is the gateway to the Somme memorial trails, unfortunately you should not plan to visit these memorial sites with your dog… Amiens was an important city during the Battle of the Somme (1916 and 1918). And besides, if you walk around Amiens, you will still see the scars of the battles of the Great War such as trenches, mine holes...
You see… I warned you that you would probably need more than a WE to fully enjoy Amiens with your dog.
