Go around the Quiberon peninsula with your dog
Today I give the floor to Fanny and Hizzy, Dog-Reporters from EmmèneTonChien.com. They take us on a hike around the Quiberon peninsula. The hike on the Quiberon peninsula is known as the GR34. Fanny walked a good part of this hike in Brittany with her dog, Hizzy. So I let him tell you about this beautiful adventure.
Follow in my footsteps on the GR34, a long-distance hiking trail that goes all around the Quiberon peninsula, and more broadly around Brittany. I tested this hike with my dog. I tell you everything in detail in this article. I wanted to do this hike with my dog while she is still in shape, as Hizzy is already going on her 8th birthday. I will now tell you about this beautiful adventure.
Quiberon peninsula: sleeping in a van with my dog
It's May 20, the first confinement is finally over and we can finally go out a bit and see our beautiful nature! We had a great need for a change of air, to breathe and see the sea, to cut ourselves off from this very special atmosphere, to enjoy Brittany.
My big sister finds me with my dog and we take the road towards Quiberon in my little van, not yet equipped at that time.
We arrive at the end of the day, in the car park of theIsthmus of Penthievre, accessible to vans and motorhomes. It is exactly the place where you enter or leave the Quiberon peninsula, so that you can see the sun set on the sea on one side but also admire the sunrise from the other side on the sea also.
We have planned our little picnic, we are alone in the parking lot. Hizzy is happy to be able to smell new smells after several weeks of confinement. In the evening we take advantage of the sunset, then by parking the truck in the other direction, the next day we greatly appreciate the sunrise over the sea.
Musher and Sophie : “If you want to know more about how travel in a van with your dog I invite you to read the article in which Raphaël explains how to organize yourself well to travel in a van with one or more dogs”.
The Quiberon Peninsula in hiking mode with my dog
During this hike around the peninsula of Quiberon, we passed by beaches, ports, gardens, paths, sidewalks, a bit of road to finish because some places were closed because of the Covid. The landscapes throughout the GR34 are very varied.
Musher and Sophie "The GR34 is indeed a magnificent hike on the wild coast of Quiberon, which will show you magnificent fine sandy beaches. You can take a break in Quiberon to recharge your batteries, have a drink on the port and eat a good ice cream, a famous Breton crepe, niches (confectionery), or taste the biscuits from Quiberon or the delicious smoked fish. You can also go and have a look all at the end of the point of Conguel and discover the Chateau Turpault. "
We are already at the end of May and it gets hot quickly so we plan to leave early to avoid too intense a heat for Hizzy. That way, we'll be more relaxed too, especially since I like to leave Hizzy totally free on the go. So we start our hike at 7:00 am. We don't know the exact total distance, about 30 km, but as it's a peninsula, anyway, just keep the sea on the same side and we'll be able to go all the way around haha!
In our backpacks, we have provided water, and a small snack for lunch. I also planned a dog travel bottle so that she can quench her thirst. Also remember to take a good pair of shoes, from my point of view, I think it's important.
Hizzy, 1 week from her 8th birthday, doesn't go anywhere too much and follows her path, watching that we follow her well behind. In this period, I was able to leave her completely free. Nevertheless, in some places, depending on the period and depending on the crowds, it is always necessary to plan a harness and leave alone so you can reattach your dog when needed. And while I'm thinking about it, don't forget also poop bags, there are a few distributors but not always full. Let's respect this beautiful nature as much as possible, and that this place remains appreciated by everyone, including those who do not have a canine companion.
Musher and Sophie : “To know how to properly prepare for a hike with a dog, I invite you to consult the article “Hiking with your dog cannot be improvised”, in which you will find lots of good advice to prepare for a hike.”
Gradually, the sun rises and the heat arrives, the landscapes are superb.
We have a good rhythm, Hizzy goes swimming when she can to cool off. We take breaks to drink water and enjoy this beautiful view, which changes as the hours pass and we advance. We choose to follow our path as close as possible to the sea, sometimes in the sand, sometimes on paths but also a little at the edge of the road, parts where you have to keep your dog on a leash for more safety.
Finally we come to the end of this tour of the Quiberon peninsula. Hizzy is still walking, she doesn't let go. She takes a few breaks when she finds some shade and drinks water.
Finally, we walked nearly 32 kilometers in 6 hours. I had planned to wear Hizzy for the last few miles but didn't need to.
Musher and Sophie : “To go on long hikes with your dog, you will sometimes need to provide a dog backpack. Indeed, a dog backpack is particularly useful for puppies, older dogs, sick dogs or simply dogs who are not very athletic because they cannot walk a lot. To choose your backpack, I invite you to consult our dog backpack comparison. "
For this hike, prefer the spring or autumn period because there were few shaded places for the dogs, moreover there are fewer people at this time and therefore more tranquility with the dogs. Especially if you want to loosen them up a bit.
I didn't want to put it off another year because I see my dog aging and I really wanted to do this hike with her, even if I had to carry her. What pride to see her finish this piece of the GR34! She handled it well! Arriving home in the evening, Hizzy had a good relaxing massage of the legs, and the whole body without forgetting a good well-deserved meal. After such an effort, you have to think about feeding your dog a little more.
For this outing, by choice and also with the restrictions, the majority of bars and restaurants being closed so we could not test dog friendly restaurant.
A practical info: there are public toilets about halfway, starting from our starting point, near a campsite.
